Sent on assignment to find what makes these places so different, The National Geographic Society’s Dan Buettner found a unique tradition that has helped prevent the ancient Japanese culture of Northern Okinawa from over-eating. The Okinawans have a 3,000-year-old proverb that they say before each meal to remind them to stop eating when their stomach is 80% full. Credited to Confucius, this tradition can be adopted by anyone.

Whether you pray before a meal or normally dive right in, start taking a brief moment before eating and say, “This food is a blessing to my body, although too much of it will hurt me. I will stop eating before I am full.”

 

3- Decorate With Blue & Green

Use color psychology to your advantage. Research has shown that “warm” colors like yellow and red can stimulate the appetite, whereas green and blue suppress it. Just think about the iconic golden arches and bright yellow benches that have symbolized  McDonald’s and Subway over the years! Try serving dinner on blue and green plates and cover your table with a blue and green tablecloth. Have fun with it. Dress your family with matching blue/green outfits and take this to the next level!

 

4- Choose Your Seat Wisely

Since most foods congregate in the middle the table, be sure to choose a seat near the end of the table at your next dinner party. You will be less likely to eat seconds and snack between courses.

Try cutting your tube-time in half for one week and fill your time playing with your kids, do some gardening, or take an evening stroll with your honey. You’ll burn lots of calories and have lots of fun!
