Earache or ear pain can be sharp, piercing and very uncomfortable. Although painfully frustrating, many a times it may not be dangerous.

Earaches occur in all ages and many factors can be behind this. Common reasons ear infection, sinus infections, cavities, hole in the eardrum, ear wax, tonsillitis and fluid build up in the middle ear (1).

Other causes include the common cold, blockage in the nasal passage, physical damage to the inside of the ear, an increase in air pressure and so on. Earaches are more frequent in small children than adults.

The current trend in medicine is not to prescribe any antibiotics unless it is necessary to treat ear infections. Usually, the ear infection clears on its own within a few days (2).

1. Olive Oil and Tea Tree Oil

Olive oil can provide fast relief from an earache. Although there is no direct scientific evidence, a paper published in 2001 suggests that a naturopathic herbal ear drop with olive oil as the base was found to be comparable to anesthetic ear drops in relieving pain associated with acute otitis media (AOM) (3).

It serves as a lubricant and helps get rid of an infection in the ear.

Olive oil can also be helpful in stopping buzzing sensations inside the ears

It can be used in combination with tree tea oil to reduce earache. Tea tree oil is well known for its powerful antifungal, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties (4).

It has shown promising effect against several strains of bacteria. A 2005 study suggested the potential role of tea tree essential oil in combating external ear infections (5).

  • Put 3 or 4 drops of lukewarm olive oil as ear drops into the ear canal once daily for a few days.
  • Alternatively, you can dip a cotton bud in the oil and put it firmly into the ear.
  • Another option is to add 2 or 3 drops of tea tree oil to 4 to 6 drops of lightly warmed olive oil. Put a few drops of this mixture into your ear using a clean cotton ball. Leave it for 5 to 10 minutes, then tilt your head down to drain out the oil.

You can also use mustard oil or coconut oil in the same way.

2. Garlic

Garlic has both analgesic and antibiotic properties, which help reduce earache caused by an ear infection.

A study published in 2001 showed that a naturopathic medicine containing garlic worked as well as the standard ear drop medicine used to treat ear pain (3).

  • Heat 1 teaspoon of minced garlic in 2 tablespoons of sesame oil. Cool and filter the oil. Put 2 or 3 drops of this garlic oil in the aching ear.
  • Another option is to extract the juice out of a few cloves of garlic and put it into the ear that hurts.

You can also use olive or mustard oil to extract the garlic oil.

3. Onion

Onion is one of the most readily available home remedies for an earache. Onions have antibiotic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

They are rich in two types of compounds, flavonoids and alkenyl cysteine sulfoxides, which are responsible for the beneficial health properties of onion (6). Plus, the antiseptic and antibacterial properties in onions work well in treating the problem.

  • Extract 1 tablespoon of onion juice from a grated onions and heat it over low heat. Then put 2 or 3 drops of the juice into affected ear 2 or 3 times a day.
  • Crush a fresh onion and wrap it tightly in a piece of clean cloth. Hold the cloth over the infected ear for 5 to 10 minutes. Do this several times a day.
  • Chop and microwave a small onion for 1 or 2 minutes. Strain the juice once it is cooled and place a few drops in the aching ear. Leave it for 10 minutes, then tilt your head and drain it out. Do this 1 or 2 times a day.

4. Hot/Cold Packs

Putting moist heat around an infected ear can work as a great pain reliever. You can use this for both adults and children, as this is a very safe remedy.

  • Simply wrap a hot water bottle in a towel and press it against the aching ear for a few minutes.
  • Ice packs can also be used for ear pain in the same way. Place an ice pack over the ear and press it over the affected ear for a few minutes.
  • You can also place hot and cold packs alternately on the aching ear for 10 minutes.

Follow any of these remedies several times a day as needed.

5. Ginger

Ginger has strong anti-inflammatory properties that can be helpful in treating ear infections. It is also an excellent natural painkiller.

earache home remedy

Ginger oil is believed to have antioxidant properties (7). According to Ayurvedic system of medicine, warm ginger juice is used to treat ear pains.

  • Extract juice from fresh ginger and put it into the outer ear canal but not directly inside the ear, to get relief from pain and reduce inflammation.
  • Another option is to mix 1 teaspoon of fresh grated ginger root in 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Leave it to infuse for 5 to 10 minutes, then put a few drops of the oil in the aching ear.

You can follow either of these remedies 1 or 2 times a day.

6. Basil

Due to its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and analgesic properties, basil is considered good for relieving earaches.

This was substantiated by a paper published in 2005 that showed basil essential oil cured ear infection in 56 to 81 percent of the animals in an experimental model in comparison to that in the placebo group (8).

  1. Crush a few basil leaves and extract the juice.
  2. Put three or four drops of this juice in the aching ear.
  3. Repeat once or twice a day.

7. Chewing gum or Xylitol

If your ear pain is due to air pressure difference, like when you are in an airplane at high altitudes you can resolve your problem with an ordinary chewing gum.

Chewing or even yawning are very helpful in relieving the pressure in the middle ear. At times you can hear popping sounds from within your head which is due to the opening and closing of the eustachian tube attempting to equalize the pressure.

A review published in 2016 regarding xylitol, a natural sugar substitute containing gum, showed that when taken regularly it can prevent occurrence of middle ear infection in healthy children (9).

Even sucking a candy or feeding a bottle to an infant work in the same manner to ease the pain.

8. Salt

Salt can do wonders even for your ears! Salt has antimicrobial activity. So it can help.

  • Put some salt in a spoon and heat it. Dip a cotton swab in this heated salt and place it in your aching ear for roughly 10 minutes. The salt will draw out the liquid and help reduce the swelling in your ears.
  • You can also gargle with salt water to thin the thick fluid in the throat or even kill harmful bacteria and viruses during a throat infection accompanying earache. It can also help clear the eustachian tubes.

9. Bishop’s Weed

Bishop’s weed, also known as ajwain, is another effective natural cure for earaches as it has antiseptic and antimicrobial properties (10).

  • Mix 1 teaspoon of Bishop’s weed oil with 3 teaspoons of sesame oil and warm it slightly. Put a few drops of the oil mixture in the affected ear. Do this once or twice a day.
  • Alternatively, heat 2 teaspoons of mustard oil and add ½ teaspoon of Bishop’s weed and a couple of garlic flakes. Heat the mixture until the garlic turns red. Strain it and put a few drops of the oil in your ear as ear drops.

Follow either of these remedies once or twice a day.

10. Herbal Inhalation/Steam Inhalation

Applying moist heat using a steam inhaler or vaporizer can be a great way to reduce earache. You can also put your head under a warm shower. The moist air opens and relaxes the airways, thus relieving the pressure and earache.

Adding essential oils such as eucalyptus oil to the vaporizer makes it more effective in combating the ear pain (11).

You can put any of the essential oils mentioned above for this on a cotton ball and then place it at the mouth of the vaporizer or as per the manufacturer’s instructions.

Here are 2 BONUS remedies for those who would like to explore more!

1. Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide has been used as a natural remedy for earaches for many years.

  1. Put a few drops of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide into the affected ear.
  2. Let it sit for several minutes before tilting your head and letting it drain into a sink.
  3. Rinse your ear with clean, distilled water.

2. Hair Dryer

After taking a shower or bath, do not towel dry your ears. Instead, use a blow dryer. Keep the dryer setting on warm and hold it slightly away from the ear. Let the warm air dry the moisture in your ear. Do not use the blow dryer for more than five minutes.

Expert Answers (Q&A)

Answered by Dr Mukesh Edward, MBBS, MS (Otorhinolaryngology)

Can a sore throat lead to earache?

Yes. Earache or otalgia can be a symptom related to local/referred causes. For example, sore throat causing referred pain from throat may cause pain near the ear canal or pinna because throat and ear are supplied by the same cranial nerve. .

Can an earache cause vertigo?

Yes, vertigo can be associated with earache in conditions like Costen syndrome (defective bite or temperomandibular joint/jaw disorders). This is due to innervation by auriculotemporal branch of 5th cranial nerve. Jaw is supplied by mandibular branch of 5th nerve. As both ear and jaw are innervated through the common trunk centrally, the exact pathology is hard to locate. A poorly aligned jaw can put pressure on the balance maintaining organs in your inner ear causing vertigo or dizziness.

What is the most effective way to treat earache at home?

Earache needs urgent medical care, however, if for any reason you cannot get immediate medical care then you can try certain temporary but safe home remedies until you get proper medical attention.

  • Apply a warm compress to soothe the pain.
  • Another very effective option is to gently press the anterior/front of the ear with your index and middle fingers in a circular motion to activate some acupressure points for temporary relief.
  • Steam inhalation, too, can help alleviate earache, especially if it is associated with sinuses and throat problems.

Why do some types of headache also cause earache?

Headache is a broad term. Some headaches are associated with TMJ disorders, cervical spine issues like spondylosis/caries spine, etc. External ear is also innervated by cervical nerves like greater auricular nerve (C2, C3 nerve roots) and lesser occipital nerve (C2 nerve root). Referred pain is possible from these sites. Examples of earache associated with headache are dental caries, sinusitis, masoiditis, migraine, temporal arteritis, extra dural abscess and ear malignancies.

Does applying cold or hot compress provide relief from earache?

Earache caused by an ear infection could be reduced by a warm compress, using a hot water bottle; a rice heating pack; or a warm, wet washcloth.

Can any underlying medical condition lead to earache?

Yes, there are local, systemic and referred causes. Referred causes are mentioned above. Some of the local causes are otitis externa (infection of external ear which is pinna, ear canal and tympanic membrane) due to bacterial/viral/fungal causes; malignant otitis externa (prone in people suffering from diabetes mellitus); and middle ear infection (otitis media, mastoiditis, choleasteatoma, etc). Some benign/malignant tumors or a condition called gouty tophi in the ear can also cause earache.

actually, it’s crazy, but I read online(and you can google it) that urine works. Then if you have basil, you can use that with it. A lady heard about it, and put a few drops in her son’s ear with a cotton ball and taped it. He felt better, then later that night she put some basil oil in it too. He was better. The body is a marvelous thing.

I am going through the exact same thing you are, I went to see the ENT today because I could not take the pain anymore, I had tried all the above remedies, he used a small vacuum, it did not hurt, scooped out some cotton ball that I had used with the olive oil and impacted wax so everyone be careful with the cotton when using the various oils. I’ve been in pain for over 6 weeks and much better tonight!

Onions obsorb bacteria, so in placing it up against your ear the onion will actually draw out the infection.
Don’t want to catch cooties from sick people at work…cut an onion in half and place it on your desk. It’ll absorb all the bacteria being spewed around instead of you.

was in extreme pain in my right ear. Used a few drops of warmed olive oil. That helped immensely, however, then took a small towel and soaked it with a couple of ounces of water. I then put the towel in the microwave for about 30 seconds on high. I used the towel against my face and ear. Between the two was able to get to sleep.

I find shoving 4 or 5 mad hornets right into the ear will do the trick just shove them in with a stick they will fit but you have to get them mad first they hate wearing clothes so knit little sweaters and tiny hats first, supper glue them to the bee and there you go.

If the olive oil and other remedies dont work go see a doctor. Regardless u should see your doctor in case the ear is infected you want to get some antibiotics and meds from your doctor.

moe, antibiotics make ear infections worse. It’s better to treat ear infections with hydrogen peroxide and distilled white vinegar.

Hi…in desperation i tried all the technics except olive and other oil drops suggested on my 7 year old son. Yeah..it worked. I did the heat cloth first. Then crushed onion wrapped in a linen..then the hot water bag. Son was crying and crying. I made him inhale steam for a few minutes which is made by putting vicks and eucalyptus oil drops. And after 45 mn5s of these stuff he said …yes, its reducing. ..he s trying to sleep now. Thanks a lot….

All that work, then a 45 minute wait? C’mon now, work smart. Olive oil works best and takes maybe 5 minutes to relieve 90 percent of the pain. My mom did it to me 50 years ago. Nothing better.

Oliive oil is the best remedy my dad used to warm it by the coal fire put it on cotton wool and put it in my ear I’m 65 have used it on my own children and still use it today nothing comes close to it.

I am trying the garlic remedy now. Wanted to go the onion route because I read about it on a natural health website previously, but I used my last onion for dinner the other day :-/. I took a glove of garlic I had storing in the cabinet, peeled the outer skin and am holding the actual clove to my ear…even gave it a squeeze and heard the ‘garlic air’ come out, and my ear is feeling better already! I’m being careful not to jam the clove into my ear, but so far so good. It’s amazing how natural remedies are out there for so many things.

OMG! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this webpage’s advice. I was at a obscure beach for 5 days without access to a pharmacy. Sitting out in the wind for some reason resulted in my developing a sharp, intense, throbbing ear ache pain. It felt like someone was stabbing me in the ear with screwdriver. I tried a warm–hot washcloth first. No cigar. Next I tried 500 mgs of ibuprofen. No cigar. I found this page and tried the first one – Olive Oil. I felt like I was on survivor…or Bear Grills. I did not have any cotton balls but I did have Qtips. My husband pulled the tips off a couple of those, slightly heated the oil and drenched them in the oil. I laid down with my head, good ear -side down – aching ear side up. I placed the olive oil saturated cotton jumble in my ear and then a warm-hot wash cloth over that. My husband turned the lights out so I could lay i the dark without any noise, light, etc. I guess I was so exhausted from the pain I drifted off too sleep. I woke-up in the middle of the night and the pain was G-O-N-E! Woo-hoo! I’m dancing! Thank you! Thank You!

I tried a few drop of hydrogen peroxide. Leave the head tilted back for a bout two minutes. You will start to hear crackling noises……that’s telling you the peroxide is cleaning out the ear. After two minutes lift head back up and catch the peroxide that runs out into a wash cloth. As it runs out it will feel so warm and good. Follow up with a few drops of warm olive oil. INSTANT CURE!! WOW!!

A cure for earaches in my grandmother’s days were rare . One of the methods was to urinate in a cup, syphon few drops with eyedropper and drop into infected ear.
Apparently urine filtered by kidneys was purified and considered an antiseptic

For swimmer’s ear (or swimming without ear plugs or showering often without ear plugs), put normal table or sea salt in a long cotton tube sock, tie it shut by making a knot in the sock. Place filled sock in microwave 10 seconds, ( 20 seconds if you have a low wattage or whatever it is called microwave, if not sure try 10 secs first.) When sock is warm to touch all over, lay it on your pillow and sleep on the side that hurts all night on the sock. The salt in the sock drawls out the moisture that is in your ear and sleeping on that side and the warm sock warms any wax therefore it too will drain. (I have heard of people making a small bag similar to a bean bag 4X4 square made of cotton material, filled with salt & sewn shut with a sewing machine to use for this purpose, they say it don’t leak like a sock lol) If ear ache is not gone by morning, ask a pharmacist for an over the counter remedy but if not better after 3 days you best see a Dr… Ear infections can get worse quick and antibiotics may be needed. I had a lot of ear infections as a kid and have raised 4 kids who have had a lot of ear infections. Warm Olive Oil ( 2-3 drops in aching ear then lay with that ear up for 30 mins. to hour … Then roll over to let it drain the melted wax from the aching ear) , Hot water bottle, and hair dryer can also work pretty well too just for the record. Good Luck to all.

This is a great article. But I see a pretty significant flaw. When using essential oils, especially peppermint oil, it is VERY important to dilute them with a carrier oil. Essential oils are not supposed to be directly applied to the skin. They need to be diluted with carrier oil, but I see that the suggestion for using peppermint oil in this article leaves out the necessity of diluting the oil, and instead suggests “only if you want to”. Using essential oils without diluting them can actually be harmful. Please be wary and take caution when using essential oils.

My very old home remedy book says to boil a clove of garlic in a half cup of water until soft, not mushy and tuck it in your ear (not pushing down into your ear canal) and cover with cotton held in place with scotch tape. Change daily and leave poultice in place for several days until infection clears. It has worked for me and others. Also a cupful of hydrogen peroxide poured into the ear (tilting the head to keep it in) and left in the ear until it stops bubbling works well for me too.

  53. Ruth L says:

I found the article helpful except for one instruction…never put an earbud firmly in your ear. Nothing smaller than your elbow should be put in your ear (now try to put your elbow in your ear and see how that works for you). Olive oil is the same as the more expensive sweet oils being sold for ear ache relief. I currently have a sinus infection and am using herbal teas with red pepper flakes, ginger, sassafras, cloves, cumin, and honey. Plus the olive oil ear treatments. I’m healing much faster than my father who has been through 2 rounds of antibiotics and is still dealing with a sinus infection.

Hi I’m 15, A couple days ago I started to have a sore throat and within a few days it got a lot worse, today my ear started to hurt and I went to the doctor, they said I had an ear infection and possibly strep! Only when I went to pick up my prescription the pharmacy had closed so I was in need of some quick relief, I only tried the olive oil and it helped so much!!!!! Thanks to this list I stopped whining to my mommy and am already starting to feel better!! I just have one question how many times should I put the olive oil in my ear before the infection will go away? Thanks TA

I use what my momma used on me & her momma on her & her momma on her & so on & so on. It was the only thing that worked for me as a child, no medicine would work, heating pad, nothing & this doesn’t cost a thing. It sounds GROSS, but it does work. My mom used warm urine. My kids think it’s funny bc they think mama peed in my ear. LOL! I reassured them that she would do it in a bowl & then use an ear dropper. 🙂

Pour it in your ear, place a cotton ball in your ear…..heals it immediately. My mother would do this for us as children. You willbe amazed on how quickly it works. I tried all these remedies and none worked. I went to the doctor and he said he saw no signs of infection. I went to an ear specialist and he told me the same thing. I went to a local witch in the neighborhood botanica and she came out with a 50/50 mixture of 100% metholated alcohol and white vinegar and after several applications with an eyedropper the pain went away. I found out later that this unexplainedear pain is usually associated with bed bugs burrowing into your ear canal to lay their eggs and sometimes the larvae doesn’t come out but burrows in deeper towards the nerves thus causing the pain. The alcohol and vinegar poisons them so they stop digging thus relieving the pain. Check your beds for fleas ticks and other night crawlers that bite for blood.

Worked great, & most everyone has salt @ home. But “Do Not” put *rubberband* in a microwave *around washcloth* it will catch fire!!! Olive oil works! My husband has an earache that’s either from an infection or wearing his earbuds too much or being too eager with the Q-tip.
