Home Remedies for Bacterial Vaginosis

by Top10HomeRemedies Team

Bacterial vaginosis is a very common type of vaginal infection. Lots of ‘good’ bacteria as well as some ‘bad’ bacteria (like Gardnerella vaginalis) are normally present in the vagina. This mild infection occurs when the balance between the good and bad bacteria gets disturbed.

Common symptoms include excessive vaginal discharge, sometimes with a fishy odor, along with itching and occasionally pain during urination.

Experts are not sure what causes the bacteria to get out of balance, but certain factors can increase your risk of infection. Such factors include having more than one sex partner, a new sex partner, excessive smoking, and douching.

Bacterial vaginosis is usually not serious and often goes away on its own. But it’s a good idea to treat it as soon as symptoms appear. Some simple home remedies can help you get rid of this annoying problem.

home remedies for bacterial vaginosis

Here are the top 10 home remedies for bacterial vaginosis.

Contents

  • 1. Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 2. Yogurt
  • 3. Tea Tree Oil
  • 4. Garlic
  • 5. Fenugreek
  • 6. Milk
  • 7. Coconut Oil
  • 8. Indian Lilac
  • 9. Tea Bags
  • 10. Oregano Oil

1. Apple Cider Vinegar

An excellent home remedy for bacterial vaginosis is apple cider vinegar. Due to its acidic nature, apple cider vinegar helps increase vaginal acidity. This makes it difficult for bad bacteria to survive and creates a better environment for good bacteria to thrive.

  1. Add one to two cups of apple cider vinegar to your bath water.
  2. Sit in the bath water for about 20 minutes.
  3. Gently pat dry the vaginal area.
  4. Do this once daily until the condition improves.

2. Yogurt

Yogurt is one of the most common home remedies for bacterial vaginosis. Yogurt contains beneficial bacteria known as lactobacillus that help fight off bad bacteria and help maintain healthy vaginal pH balance.

  • Dip a cotton pad in yogurt and apply it on the affected area. Leave it on for half an hour and then wash the area thoroughly with fresh water. Repeat three times a day until your symptoms are gone.
  • You may also dip a tampon in yogurt and put it in the vagina for one to two hours. Do this twice daily until the symptoms completely disappear.
  • Also, eat two cups of plain yogurt daily to help restore the vagina’s normal pH balance and minimize the growth of bad bacteria.

3. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil contains natural antibacterial as well as antifungal compounds that help kill the germs that cause bacterial vaginosis. It will also combat the awful smell that is common with bacterial vaginosis.

  • Add a few drops of tea tree oil to a small bowl of warm water and stir it well. Use the solution to rinse your vagina. Do this once daily for three to four weeks.
  • Another option is to add three drops of tea tree oil and three cups of white vinegar to your lukewarm bath water and then soak in it for half an hour. Follow this remedy every other day for one to two months as needed.

4. Garlic

Garlic is a natural antibiotic that can help treat bacterial vaginosis. Also, its antifungal properties will keep the bad bacteria in check.

  • Crush three to four garlic cloves. Smear the mashed garlic on the affected area. Leave it on for 20 minutes and then rinse the area with lukewarm water. Follow this remedy once daily for several months.
  • Another option is to wrap one garlic clove in gauze and put it in the vagina. Leave it in for not more than half an hour as it can cause soreness. Use this treatment once daily for several days.
  • Also, eat garlic in raw or cooked form daily. If you cannot tolerate the taste of garlic, you can opt for garlic capsules after consulting a doctor.

5. Fenugreek

Fenugreek is highly beneficial for treating bacterial vaginosis. It will help improve the pH level in the vagina and boost the immune system to speed up the healing process.

  • Soak two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in a glass of water overnight. In the morning, drink this water on an empty stomach. Do this daily for at least a month until you notice improvement in your condition.
  • Mix one teaspoon of fenugreek powder in a cup of yogurt. Eat it twice daily for several days until your symptoms subside.
  • Steep one teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in a cup of hot water for about five minutes. Strain it, add little honey and drink this tea two or three times daily as long as needed.

6. Milk

Milk contains lactobacilli bacteria that make it as an excellent natural cure for bacterial vaginosis. Plus, milk helps strengthen the immune system.

  • Dip a tampon in chilled milk and insert it into your vagina. Keep the tampon in for one to two hours and then remove it. Do this once daily for several days to relieve symptoms.
  • Alternatively, add one teaspoon of turmeric powder to a glass of warm milk. Drink this mixture once daily until your condition improves.

7. Coconut Oil

coconut oil

Coconut oil has natural antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties that can kill the germs that cause bacterial vaginosis and prevent it from recurring.

  • Apply organic coconut oil on the affected area three times daily until your condition improves.
  • Alternatively, soak a tampon in organic coconut oil and insert it in the vagina. Leave it in for a couple of hours. Rinse the area with lukewarm water thoroughly after removing the tampon. Do this once daily for several days.
  • Also, use coconut oil in your cooking as much as possible to boost your immune system and speed up the healing process.

8. Indian Lilac

neem

Indian lilac, also known as neem or margosa, contains antibacterial and antifungal properties that help reduce itching and inflammation as well as kill the germs that cause this infection.

  1. Heat a handful of margosa leaves in a pan. You do not need to add water or any liquid.
  2. Allow the leaves to cool and then grind them into a fine powder.
  3. Mix two teaspoons of the powder with a little water to make a paste.
  4. Apply the paste in and around the vagina. Leave it for half an hour and then rinse with lukewarm water.
  5. Do this twice daily until your symptoms are completely gone.

9. Tea Bags

tea bags

The tannins present in tea have antibiotic and astringent properties that help soothe the burning sensation as well as reduce swelling and irritation.

Advertisements
  1. Soak a tea bag in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes.
  2. Put it in the refrigerator for a few minutes to chill it.
  3. Apply the tea bag externally on the affected area to relieve itching.
  4. Follow this remedy three or four times daily for a few weeks to clear up the infection completely.

10. Oregano Oil

oregano oil

Oregano oil contains both antibacterial and antifungal properties and can be used to fight the germs responsible for bacterial vaginosis. It can also effectively prevent recurrence of the infection. For treating bacterial vaginosis, use oregano oil that does not contain alcohol.

  • Mix three drops of oregano oil with one tablespoon of olive oil. Apply it on the affected area and leave it on for two hours. Do this once daily until you notice improvement.
  • Alternatively, mix three drops of oregano oil in a glass of lukewarm water. Drink it twice daily. Continue this treatment for one to two months.

With these remedies, you can easily control the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis and even prevent it from recurring. However, if you do not see any improvement within two weeks, consult your doctor.

Greetings ladies. .this bv is a nasty culprit huh.. we can all agree.. I’ll tell ya’ll how to solve this..three main things that causes bv…changing sex partners, stress, and the menstrual cycle. For me, it’s the first two..but mostly stress…I had bv for a year, every month after my cycle, it pops up. .I was going through a rough time and stressing a lot, then I became a vegan and cut a lot of things out my diet, especially sugar… it went away and never came back till last yr for the first time. I had a new boyfriend and the first time we had intercourse I got bv. He also turned out to b a monster and put me thru extreme stress which kept bv coming bac..also I was eating some things again, like sweets and chips, and I think that had a lot to do with it coming bac as well.. so now I’m going completely vegan, no junk watsoever and im gonna make sure i DO NOT STRESS. to make it short. ..proper diet, no stress and lots of water and yogurt. Apple cider works too… whenever im doing well and stressfree, I have no bv. Not that you hav to go vegan, but at least a alanced diet….and limit sex partners. . I think the simple solution is just a balanced life period…good luck ladies. …may the vicious bv forever disappear. ..

I do believe that there is a definite confusion between diagnosis of BV and SDT. is it trichomonas or BV??? Realy because every time i have sex with my partner I think it is being transmitted back and forth. third time now , I am antibiotics in the last 6 months. something wrong in the medical treatments. I mean in the actual diagnosing. They are handing out to much of antibiotics which is harming people.

No new sex partner’s but stressed out 24/7..I do have Interstitial cystitis which I’m told causes this n yeast which I get faithfully, I even take probiotic still get it

Your not supposed to put anything into your vagina. You’ll upset it’s ph balance. If you have an infection you can talk a bath with Apple cider vinegar……but otherwise go see a doctor, and wear cotton underwear.

I also heard wearing a period cup instead of tampons and pads works wonders to prevent infections…..so think about that.

Also you can’t wash the inside of your vagina but can wash the outside. Your vagina self cleans.

    • Adrianne Brown says:

Hey Denise, that is the exact reason why we are all here. The antibiotics that they give, does not work. I have BV from when I had a UTI (from the antibiotics) and prescribed medication 3 different times to cure it. All it did was make me sick, keep the symptoms away while I was on it, and then it returns. Home remedies like this help wonders, verses the medication they prescribe. What else is there to do when you’re in a situation like that?

      • kay says:

Yes Adrienne!!!! I agree and our vagina DOES not cleans itself!!! We as women have to do our job and wash twice daily with mild soap. I often wipe my vulva putter area with apple cider vinager..

        • ME says:

The vagina self cleans, hence the normal discharge you see.
Secondly, youre not suppose to use soap around your vagina, as it can cause your pH to drop because soap is an alkaline. Even the mildest soap can cause your pH to drop drastically. Clean, warm water and a rag will do.

exactly. I have had two dr tell me the same thing only water in the area. I don’t even use a rag. I only use my hand to get the water in the area

        • stancie says:

OMG! YES, our v’jayjays are in fact self cleasing! But yes we are supposed to cleanse as much of it that we can inside and out (unless ya like being nasty!)

      • Kat says:

Exactly! I agree with you Adrianne. I have been to the doctors over and over again on 3 different antibiotics only to have it back soon after. Home remedies are the way to go. Doctors and phar make too money off of their patients to go back to the old school remedies like our ancestors did. Plus none of the side effects of the meds. I just love this site!!! Thank you!

        • falesha says:

I have time same problem and our seems like they give me meds for the bv but then i get a yeast infection in going to try the vinegar and yogurt. This is crazy what my doctor is doing.

          • lee says:

I agree because the antibiotics for the bv does cause yeast infections.

        • lea says:

The antibiotics docs prescribe kill ALL bacteria not just the bad ones and therefore thats what creates another problem later because you have to take it upon yourself to reintroduce good bacteria from yogurt or other sources. I dont personally use antibiotics at all for the problem but its not necessarily that the antibiotics dont work its just that its only half of the problem and the doctors dont care enough about us or dont know themselves enough to explain that to us. But naturally using organic unflavored yogurt is easy and effective to use as step two to repopulate your vagina with good bacteria and maintenence once a week can keep it balanced permenantly.

      What is a period cup

      • lea says:

Its a little flexible bowl that inserts inside the vagina. It sits near the cervix and catches the blood. You remove it rinse it and reinsert it. You can even have sex with it in. I have used one for years. They have disposable types and more expensive non disposable that you wash and store between. They are less expensive and save on trash and smells and are easier to use all around. Purchase at whole foods or other natural health stores.

        • Sherri says:

I am honestly really sad and embarrassed about how I have this infection. I get scared to tell my mom sometimes because I’m only 14 and it’s just uncomfortable walking around like this. I really want to use these home remedies but I don’t feel like my mother would let me. At this point, I will do anything for it to just go away. I’ve tried feminine wash and anti-itch cream, and all it did was take away the scent. I’m really sick of it and I’d really like to move on from this annoying stage. I just need to build the confidence to speak to my mother.

    • lesly says:

Lenet and Kiara you both really need to speak with your mothers about this especially if you are having sex (not saying you are) but if you are it could possibly be something worse! (STD) Some STD’s left untreated could cause more damage! Go to your mothers girls because it sounds like you both “maybe” assuming you have BV.. (Which it could possibly be but better safe than sorry)

      Lanet,
I read comments from july so i may be a little late with this. From a nurses point of view. Are you sure it is Bacterial vaginosis? Yeast infections can have order and itch as well. I don’t know rather you are sexually active or not but two other things can bring on these infections too, Stress and your monthly mensus. Ph gets upset and here come the troubles. I work with a Nurse Practitioner who also believes in home remedies. Most are natural and better for you than a synthetic chemical. If your symptoms persist or worsen, it would be wise to see a physician for you may have another underlying problem.

      • RR says:

what would you personally think I have been to the dr many many times Nd its from my mens. cycle as to what she thinks so I have to take this meds. once a month and as soon as I stop it comes back or its a new month. I have never used home remedy and I would like to give it a shot . any dr that I have seen wont suggest to home remedies.

    • JADE says:

Have you visited the doctor with this problem. If u haven’t you should. Just don’t want you to treat the wrong thing. Once it has been confirmed by the gyno go right ahead and use these remedies.

I too am older. I am 52 yrs old, 1st year with BV, 2nd round. I haven’t been sexually active since 2012. So I was completely baffled and this is completely new to me. The antibiotics make me sick. I’m surprised of the things I can do at home. It is uncomfortable and embarrassing. I am a Diabetic. I believe our bodies can be healed by eating better. Eliminating culprits such as sugar. I love Coke. It’s one thing I drink a lot of, so now I will be eliminating it from my diet and trying alkaline water. I am also a Mom of 4 girls. I would want my girls to come to me so we could work this out together.

I swear I got BV if is sneezed wrong. I just couldn’t get it to quit. I found so much stuff for homeopathic cures and the only one that worked was the apple cider vinegar. I put it in the bath and stayed put till the water went cold. Instant relief. I did it for a week. Guess whose been BV free for months? This girl!! I’m so happy. Seriously though, give it a try. You’re not chopping down on so much garlic every vampire in Transylvania is gagging, you’re not putting anything up there, you’re just taking a nice soothing bath….with vinegar. I doubted. Hello Ladies, I have suffered with bv for years. I have tried vh essentials, metronidazole, probiotics and peroxide all of which helped but it always came back. I stumbled upon what is called baking soda therapy

Baking soda is a natural chemical compound that restores health, cleanses the body and eradicates toxic substances and effective at restoring balance in the body without harsh chemicals or toxins.
I eat healthy, and run 3-4 times a week however I drink 3 to 4 cups of coffee with a teaspoon of sugar in each cup a day. I realized that this might be the culprit but I LOVE COFFEE and SUGAR!

I started doing the Baking Soda Therapy and within days, the bv started clearing up and it has stayed that way for several months. Every morning I mix a teaspoon of baking soda into about 12 ounces of water (a tall cup) and drink. The only draw back is the taste, it is like drinking a tall cup of salt water however, the benefits are amazing! It has worked wonders for me. Give yourself atleast half hour before or after a meal as to not mess with your digestive process. Maybe start with half a teaspoon and gradually increase as your body gets use to it.

I did not have to combine this with any other methods however if it doesn’t do the trick for you, perhaps combine it with probiotics and vh essentials. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Wow. Thank you Lia. I drink a lot of coffee and have been thinking of drinking green tea instead. It’s much healthier for you without the crash. I love baking soda!! It had so many other benifits as well. It kills all other types is odors as well and never thought of useing it for bv. Thank you God another great idea to add to the list!

Lia..thank you for this information. I really hopes this does the trick. I have had BV for at least 8 months now and I am beyond sick of it. The discharge is so embarrassing and I have to wear a light day/maxi pad almost every single day. I have been prescribed pills at least 10 times but it never works… I will start the Baking Soda tomorrow and let you guys know how it works. #BVmustgo

Tracy and everyone else. Your first defense is always plain yogurt. I am treating myself now. I think my BV is a culmination of stress and me eating too many sweets brought BV about. I get instant relief but I will be treating myself for a week and going back to my nutribullet green smoothies. You will have to buy monistat just to get the applicator. I did. Monistat cream is not for BV its only to treat yeast infections. I haven’t had BV since my college days in the 90’s. I was told then I could use plain yogurt and never forgot about it.

thank you for these information. I am virgin and my vaginal discharge is almost yellow most of the time.it is not clear and milky. but i don’t have other symptoms. it is odorless and i don’t have itching or burning. my discharge is not excessive. once i took metronidazole for 7 days and it seemed that my discharge turned clear, but again it became yellow. i don’t know if it is normal or not. i have read everywhere that BV has fishy odor and itching.but i don’t have these symptoms.please someone tell me,if i am normal or not.

    • Michelle says:

I read the odour is fishy or musty, for me, musty when on my period. I read several sites but they did not say BV causes itchiness. Before having antibiotics again ask your doctor to take a swab and have your discharge tested.

You might want to have your doctor do a culture for yeast infection. Either way, the yogurt, garlic, vinegar, and/or baking soda should help with bacterial or yeast infection.

Hello! I have suffered from BV on and off for almost one year. At first I kept hoping the anti biotics would eventually end it, but in fact I believe they make it worse in the long run. I have tried all of the remedies above. They have all made a positive diff in some way, albeit not a permanent one. UNTIL NOW! Please please try apple cider vinegar pills. They are inexpensive, and I find it easier to take frequently than downing the vinegar straight. I take 2 pills in the morning along with a vaginal-support probiotic (50 billion per capsule), and then I take 2 more apple cider pills in the evening. Boom, gone. So far permanently. If I have mild discomfort I use some distilled water mixed with lavender and tea tree oil… Mostly water only a few drops of the oils. You’ll be able to adjust to your liking. I have a bottle of that mixture and when I need it I soak a cotton pad and wipe with that. It feels amazing, and best if all it is fabulous to use if you wanna freshen up for your man, you’ll smell like flowers baby! Xo

Hello Ladies, I am so happy to have found this home remedy site. I’ve delt with BV for almost 4 years. I also just realized it started after having the Morena IUD inserted to help my very long menstruation cycles because of perimenopause. My boyfriend and I had sex prior and no bv. But since the IUD also has birth control laced to it. I noticed my normal discharge was different, not bad but different. Then the bv started.I was treated with antibiotics and told not to use pads. Just use cotton underwear. Months would pass and again. I am so done with antibiotics. That can’t be good in the long run. So I have been doing the acv baths for 3 days now. And after peeing only at home though, I rinse with acv and warm water. So far the oder is gone. That discharge that we naturally have in the vulva is not as thick. I am still not in the clear. I haven’t had sex with my boyfriend because I am so self conscious about it. I had told him one time that my doctor said when a man has not been circumsized, that he needs to pull back the foreskin well and clean it well. He does because I checked it. I have tons of stress and eat way too much sugar. So that will change. I also started to eat other types of probiotics to my diet. I will reply with my out come of all these remedies. Chin up ladies. Wishing us all a full recovery and balance 🙂

Hey! Just a question about the yogurt; does it have to be completely plain while eating it? Is it okay to add just a little honey or does that ruin the point? Just cuz I can’t eat plain yogurt without a little flavour. Also, does the coconut oil work for removing the odour and itchiness? Thanks for all the help btw I had no idea this infection even existed before! (They don’t teach you a lot in sex Ed…)

I’m suffering with this BV. I feel embarrassed every time my boyfriend and I have sex he doesn’t even go down on me anymore because he knows once we start intercourse the smell will appear. There has even been times he wouldn’t stay hard because of the smell. I feel like the antibiotics have only made it worst. I’m going to give the apple cider remedy a try. I pray that it works because I’m only 22 and this is so stressful to not even enjoy my intimate life. Even in school I can smell the odor coming through. Sigh why me? 🙁

I know what you mean the acv worked for me but i also realized the reason i was getting bv often was because of oralsex With my bf. Make sense since our mouths have a ton of germs in them maybe after you try some of these remedies Your bf could wash his mouth thoroughly beforehand and always use a condom. Thats what helped me. oh and keep your vaginal area dry. I wore pads during the day when i was using some of the remedies and it stopped the smell from coming though my clothes.good luck

The first time I found out I had bacterial vaginosis I was 19. The doctor prescribed some pills including (flagyl) the symptoms went away but came about 2 years later. Again I went to the doctor got the same type of pills but this time it went away but came back even sooner and it goes away and always comes back. The worst part of BV is the awful smell. It made me so self conscious as I was always left thinking if everyone around me could smell it. I used the apple cider vinegar as a douche and swear ladies it’s the best. After one use the smell was completely gone! After day 2 little to no secretions, this message was a god send. I plan on continuing the apple cider douche but also buying the pro biotic pills. I’m excited that another method actually works as I was tired of going to the doctor.

I have had bv since I was 17. I am 25 now and my symptoms seems to have gotten worst. I have been to the doctor numerous times but the antibiotics prescribed never works. The smell is awful and since lately it seems like everyone every where I go can smell it, even from a couple feet away. I have been under a lot of stress lately and it has definitely stemmed from bv. I stopped working and quit school because the stares and comments are too hard to deal with. I am determine to get rid of this and wont stop till I do. Last month I took a dose of metronidazole that only worked for a few days so I decided to try home remedies. I figured out that sperms as well as scented soaps, sweating and my urine make my odour worst. Last night I douche with peroxide in warm water that I heated on the stove. Then I did a apple cider vinegar douche right after. This morning when I woke up I couldn’t smell anything. I repeat the process this morning and the smell was gone. Also for the past two days I drank a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a cup of warm water in the mornings, avoided meat, sodas and sugar and I am taking vitamin d supplements to help boost my immune system. I’m going to douche with the peroxide and then apple cider vinegar for about three more days then watch what happens.

One lady said to put the probiotics in the vaginal area over night and I was very relunctant because they always say do not put anything in your vaginal area and don’t douche. Well she said first take a douche bottle and put half apple cider vinegar and half peroxide with some warm water and then overnight insert the pill . Insert the pill three days in a row. and use the tea tree oil the next day just to wipe the outside . When I tell you this has saved my life……Ladies I am here to tell you it works. Now after intercourse I make sure to wash and enter a pill just to make sure that this awful thing doesn’t come back and I have been set free. Ladies it work for real. I can’t stress this enough……..try it you won’t be sorry!!!!!!!!!!

I’m 14 and I’m really worried. I think I have BV but I’m not sure. My period ended two days ago and that is when it started. Right when my period ended. I have this varrying discharge that really worries me. The first day it was a light brown which turned into a yellowish color. I tried a hydrogen peroxide “cleanse” using 5ml of water and 5ml of peroxide in a syringe. The next time I used the restroom there was blood that looked kinda old so it could be from my period that just ended. After each time I use the rinse there is the old blood. Otherwise it is yellow or brown. It has a fishy odor and occasional itching. I am a virgin so it can’t be from switching partners. I really don’t want to talk to my mom because she will freak out and make a huge deal out of it 🙁 please help me! Should I continue too use the peroxide and see if it improves? I have used it twice.

Update. On day three the discharge was nearly completely gone. I just sit in a disposable bowl of water and vinegar like a pre soak before I shower. I gently insert a finger to make sure it really cleansing the area. The smells gone, the discharge is nearly gone, the itch is gone. I’ve read about the peroxide treatment but I decided to give this a try before I insert anything. Will continue for another week and update.

I am for home remedies, but for people that haven’t been diagnosed how can you be sure what you have. Young girls should talk to their mother’s and see a doctor. If you have a sexually transmitted disease you better go to the doctor.

Doctors STOP treating BV with antibiotics. They DO NOT work. It is not an infection, it is just an imbalance in bacteria. I put my BV down to problems getting used to tampons when I was 13. I was too scared to pull one out, I was not intimate with my private parts at that age and I seemed to tense right up so it wouldn’t come out. I think it was in there for 2 awful weeks! Didn’t feel able to talk to my mother. Since then I have suffered permanently smelly Vag, especially after sex. A while ago I read on the internet about DISTILLED MALT VINEGAR, it’s the clear stuff (seems more clean and pure to me than apple cider vinegar and only 50p a bottle). I diluted some with water, probably about 10 parts water to one part vinegar, then soaked a tampon in it and pushed the tampon right in for a few hours. If it stings pull it out, it’s been in too long or is not diluted enough. Use the water left to wash around the vag area. I shower normally every day but have a bath every week or two with a good splash of the distilled vinegar in it ( a bit of douching here helps ). No BV anymore after 30 years! My life is transformed! BV is a most depressing condition and it has ruined my sex life and closest relationships, yet is seems to be simple to cure. NO-ONE should have to put up with it. DOCTORS please sort yourselves out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The first time it happen she went to the doctor and they prescribed her metronidazole it worked for almost several months after that problem returned and the doctors prescribed her creams and none of it worked , again went to the doctors and prescribed her a stronger doze of metronidazole (keep in mind pills give a sour taste in mouth all thru the treatment). in the process of treatment my wife started getting headaches and problems with lights (glare) we didn’t know why was that happening until we looked up the side effects for those pills, thru the process the pain went away but side effects remain for almost two months but bacteria was gone, doctor also had told her to let her vaginal pubic hair to grow to help, again the same thing is happening now so i hope this website info helps her thanks all of you for your comments

Odd thing is that it seems like I didn’t start having any vaginal issues until I stopped having sex as often. Even when I was having sex, it wasn’t too often and it was only one person. I HAVE to take birth control because my body just won’t have a period. I’ve had hormonal tests and two different ultrasounds done and everything was fine. I had to get treated for a yeast infection although I take very good care of myself. So, it could be from the birth control? I got treated for that but now I’m sure I have BV and it actually goes away for a little while at the end of my period. I was thinking of using the tea tree oil but, tea tree oil is some pretty potent stuff! So, I was wondering what exactly is “a few drops” and what do you all recommend from these many remedies?

  44. Yvette says:

I recently was diagnosed with BV and was initially prescribed an antibiotic
It went away and then came back. I believe I got BV due to high level of stress. My husband of 16 year walked out on me and our 13 you daughter. I was drinking wine every night, eating a lot.of sweets as well. After BV returned for the 3rd time my Dr prescribed the boric acid pills and they seem to b working great so far. I have about 15 more to take before treatment is complete. I’m taking Florijan 3, 800 mgs of folic acid, eating yogurt, eliminating coffee, sweets and trying to eat healthier. My BV didn’t produce any itching or soreness, just watery discharge. The smell originally was sum what bad but has gotten much better..in fact there is no oder. I’m going to try the acv, especially during and after my period. Reading all the posts it’s evident that different things work for different women, we just have to find what works for us. I recently started a new relationship and I’m praying after this treatment, along with my diet changes? BV will die AWAY! Good luck ladies! We women go thru so much. Oh, my doctor also did blood work to rule out STDs, such as syphilis and gonorrhea…which I didn’t think I had any of those but she wanted to rule them out anyhow. Again good luck!

After yogurt tampons, coconut oil tampons, acupuncture and Chinese herbs designed to fight “damp heat” (Eastern medicine’s explanation of the cause of bv), I tried the apple cider vinegar-soaked paper towel held to the surface area of the vagina for 20 minutes (thank you SO much Brynn!) and it worked!!! Of course, that night I could only smell the vinegar so I wasn’t sure if it had worked. The next day (and it is now 2 days later) I can verify the smell is GONE! The paper towel is SO much easier than the bath, and 20 minutes is all you need! (Not to mention how much less acv you need!) I can’t believe I tried all the other things first, and dealt with this for months! They should delete numbers 2-9 and say simply “1. Apple Cider Vinegar. It’s all you need.” Note: there is a slight sensation during the 20 minutes that almost feels mildly (VERY mildly) discomforting. I say that so that you don’t think that you need to stop. It WORKS. Period.

Me again, I am SO sorry to report that it was false hope that it went away. The odor was definitely gone for 3 or 4 days, but is now plaguing me yet again. I re-read the previous comments and it looks like a recurring theme is treatment for multiple days, even when symptoms have seemed to subside. I will try multiple days of douching with the acv (moving up from paper towel method) as well as the bath. I will keep you posted, and am PRAYING to report back great news soon!

I’ve to the doctor three times trying differenti ways of the same antibiotic and my bv keeps coming back after my period. I was treated for BV last month with metronidazole it went away and came back after I had oral sex 5 days ago. Last night I melted organic extra virgin coconut oil and soaked it up with a tampon and inserted it overnight, this morning I
I soaked in the tub with 1/2 Apple cider vinegar and 7 drops on lavender essential oil. Felt a huge difference smell subsided no discharge no burning. Tonight I’ve inserted tampon with coconut oil and 3 drops lavender essential oil it tingles a little but it’s busy working killing those bad bacteria. I’ve also started eating activa yogurt. I’ll soak again in the morning with acv and lavender essential oil. I think after a few more days I’ll be better than normal.

When i met my husband, i got a BV right away and it never left me for 5 years, even though i got several antibiotics treatments, it would go away and come back the next month. My doctor even provided me with a 12months prescription to take after my period! I also took some probiotics supplements and it seriously did help but i wasnt “steady” with it because of the price so whenever i stopped, it came back and i needed meds.

Now, my husband and I separated, i got a BV antiobiotics treatment after the separation and it was GONE!!!….. Until we had sex together again 8 months later and it was back right away!!!

I then had a new family doctor who explained to me that BV isnt an std and men cant really have it and cant be tested for it but they CAN carry it and pass it back to their partner if shes sensitive about that. My doctor treated both of us simultaneously and it was completely gone!

If im going through a stressful time i need to stick to my probiotics supplements right away and i now know that if BV comes back, my partner and I both need to be treated!!

So ladies, BV isnt an STD but treat it as it was. Get your partner treated with you and if you have different partners, condoms are the only way to go! Oh and probiotics from the drugstores are pricey but very much worth it!!!

Did you doc prescribe for your husband or did he go see someone, and who? I feel we like we play the back and forth game with my bv! And just this week my hubby thought maybe he should be checked out as well. Huh!

I just talked to my doc, and they say it’s not an “infection” per se but a pH imbalance. Suggested we talk about boric acid pills. We shall see!

Hi friends. I was just told that I have BV and I think I caught it very early. I was given the antibiotic and was told that it would go away without the antibiotic. I am very interested in getting rid of it naturally. I took oil of oregano and a swig of apple cider vinegar as soon as I got home. I can definitely get rid of this on my own? Please tell me exactly what I need to do! Thank you!

I´ve had it for 10 months now. I´m trying apple cider vinegar and I will let you know if it works. I´m a med student so I promise I will do a research of this! I´ve been searching in cientific papers and the treatment is only with antibiotics and there are no studies about it. It seems like a simple thing but it´s a very complicated and difficult problem. Girls I wish you the best and I´m trying all these methods so I hope they work. Keep Strong and think positively, better things are coming.

Hi ladies. I have suffered with BV unknowingly for about 8 months. I thought it was a recurring yeast infection. I felt disgusting. I didn’t have a horrible smell, but I was just so damn itchy. And the discharge was really annoying. I tried everything. Cut out sugar, used monistat, stopped using the gentle soap I used to wash with, switched to free & clear detergent for clothes, stopped wearing thongs, stopped shaving down there, and even stopped drinking from my keurig (I thought maybe it was harboring harmful bacteria) in effort to combat it.

Well, I eventually went to the doctor and l learned I had BV. She gave me 14 pills of Flagyl that I was to take every 12 hours for a week. The first few days I felt sick from the pills, but my vaginal discharge stopped so I was happy. Day 5 it came back and by day 7 I was in tears at how frustrated I was.

I made another appt with my doctor, but I was desperate, so I took a bath in Bragg’s Organic Apple Cider Vinegar (2 cups ACV in a shallow tub, just enough to reach your vag) the night before and the morning before my appointment. I rubbed it into myself well. My itching went away almost immediately. I went to my dr. the next day and she tested me again and could not find any harmful bacteria! She told me I could douche with diluted ACV too, that it would not be harmful. It’s just the soapy/synthetic chemical douches that are not good for your vagina.

Another thing I did was put a probiotic inside of my vagina after the bath. It helps repopulate the ‘good’ bacteria so they can outnumber the ‘bad’ bacteria.

I tried a Vitamin C caplet inside my vagina last night, and it burned really bad. So be careful about that. It seemed to work but it was very uncomfortable when I was at work this morning, almost wanted to go home to cleanse myself with water.

I’ve been doing the baths every day for almost a week now, and I’m going to stop soon and see what happens. Haven’t had sex with my boyfriend in over a month now, and I hope it doesn’t come back after we are intimate.

Also, my dr. said that there are no studies confirming men can carry BV, but she suspects that men CAN carry it. She said if I had a problem after having sex with my boyfriend, she would give him an rx of flagyl.

I just wanted to add my experience to this forum because you ladies on here have saved my sex life! I can’t believe something simple as ACV is the cure for this pesky infection.

I agree, it is so difficult to get rid off. Just before my period, after sex make it come right back again. It really has to do with pH changes in the vagina. The only thing that has helped is taking all the junk out of my diet. No processed foods and eating a mostly vegan diet with sprouts and veggies. I still get flare ups when the diet changes or STRESS which is constant…

I had this for the first time ever a few months ago. Cured it in under a week doin a douche of hydrogen peroxide / distilled water (equal amounts), then a mixture of coconut oil, probiotics, and boric acid using a vaginal suppository doo-hickey. Tried to stay flat for hour after insertion. Wore a pad for drainage. Did it twice a day. I also ate 3 raw garlic cloves, did 2 shots of ACV, and doubled my oral probiotic. I don’t eat processed foods, sugar, or wheat/grains anyway, but would definitely cut back on those as well

Probiotics. Take 1 to 2 a day…depending on what the instructions say. …there are generic brands of probiotics as well with lower billions. Take for a few weeks. It will work miracles. A natural way to maintain digestion, urinary, and vaginal health.

    Hi ladies,

Thanks for all the info. I’d had bv once or twice in the past but this last year it’s been recurrent and a serious bother. I’ve been prescribed meds from my gyno multiple times. Have tried both oral meds and the vaginal kind. Both make me feel really sick and both cause a yeast infection every time, and the symptoms have been returning. Luckily I don’t itch or anything but there is a discharge sometimes and at times a slight odor. I’ve taken to showering multiple times a day and only cotton underwear. Sometimes I don’t wear them; trying to let it breathe. I’m intrigued by natural cures and remedies and have been diagnosed w/ bv and tested so I’m sure it’s not an STI or anything. I agree women who are unsure should get checked out first. I am wary of actually inserting foreign objects and/or food-type products vaginally; it just seems like a bad idea, and every doctor I’ve ever been to has told me never to douche and I’ve never tried that and not sure I want to go that route. I also would be curious to hear some updates from ladies who have tried this and that and how it’s worked out. To the younger girls who have posted – I understand about feeling uncomfortable talking to your moms about this. Is there some other woman you can talk to? Aunt? Older sister? Someone else’s mother? That might help. I think most mothers would be understanding though. Thank god for the internet!

I am so frustrated as the discharge comes out in blobs all the time feeling as if I peed myself. It’s so embarassing and frustrating at the same time. I have not had intercourse with my husband for over a month now and I bought betadine vaginal gel to treat the problem.it seemed to have been working and then boom it just gets worse again. For the first time a few days ago as it seemed to be much better i tried having intercourse and OMG how painful that was. I was itchy and swollen all over again. Up until now nothing us helping me. I’m so glad I came across this sight. I am going to try apple cider as of tomorrow and I hope it helps. My husband is already frustrated with me because of this and says I don’t do anything about it when I have tried so many things and nothing has helped.

I was treated with the usual antibiotics with some relief but have since started taking a week ago a supplement that has worked wonders to reduce and hopefully eliminate my discharge and itching. Also I’ve used calamine lotion for itching which actually has worked also ….I feel almost normal again.Thanx to everyone here for sharing ?

    Hello ladies,

Can anyone provide any feedback? I have been using ACV for 3 days now, I don’t have a tub so I just wash in my shower with it, does this work also? or should I maybe sit in a bowl for 20 minutes? I wash and insert a finger so that I can get some ACV up there, should I be doing that or no? I have noticed a huge improvement but after a couple of hours the fishy smell will come back. I keep getting this after my period, its been 3 months now =(.

How long did it take for your symptoms to completely go away after starting ACV?

    Thanks in advance

Hello Ladies, I’m giving feedback from over a month ago. I had initially started with the ACV and water baths for 20 minutes X5 days. I got quick results. But not totally free. I added probitics orally for about 2 weeks. I was almost symptom free. I had explained in my previous post that I had my first episode of BV right after having the Morena IUD inserted in 2012. A few weeks passed and that was the beginning of off and on symptoms. Some treated with oral antibiotics and a couple of times it went away by itself. Stress is a factor and we’ll it’s hard not to stress about BV. Well I have been routinely using ACV washes, not soaking. I plan to remove the IUD and again be treated with antibiotics next month. The symptoms are back near and around the labia and not vaginally. No discharge but the white film around my labia is constantly coming back. So I will repost what happens after the stupid IUD is removed. I pray that is the culprit. My hormones are way off since first having it. I am 49. I never had BV prior to the mirena IUD. I am dreading having intimacy with my boyfriend. Although I didn’t try the other suppository type that I read in the earlier posts from the ladies. I think while I wait for my appointment, I will look for those and give those a try. I also tried applying fat free plain Greek yogurt that did help as well. Good luck ladies. I will be back to report. I really need feedback as well. Please reply to help us all out. PLEASE. THANKS and bye for now.

Fellow long time sufferer here (about a year). Also tried antibiotics 3 times, only to have the BV return after a month or two. Tried probiotic pills and inserts, which seemed to help at first, but not anymore. I read on another site that symptoms will subside if you insert a vitamin C (not the chewable kind and not the kind with rosehips because rosehips make it burn) into the vagina. Since Vit C is cheap and available everywhere I figured I’d try it since I wanted relief that day. Symptoms were gone the next morning, but it is a short term fix. And it makes the vagina acidic so then my other old foe (yeast) popped up with a vengeance. After reading posts here and some customer reviews, I just purchased Boric Acid suppositories. Fingers crossed that they will be a long term solution, but if you ladies need a quick fix until you can regroup and try for something long term, sleeping with a Vit C up there works.

I’m a 42 yo mum of 4..and not as sexually active anymore since my husband died 5 years ago.. I had merena coil fitted and only developed problems after I had it inserted 4 years ago. Some good ideas here and I will try anything to get rid of the awful smell. I have good hygiene shower every day and change underwear twice daily but still plagued with discharge and smell. My mum has repeatedly told me there is a sour milk smell in my car but so embarrassed as I know it’s from me as even after an hour out of shower I am conscious of it myself. I’ve tried antibiotics from doc too but symptoms return after a week. The joys of being a woman! I’m trying ACV tonight. Fingers crossed.. I want to be back to normal down there

I use the CHEWABLE vitamin C in the highest dosage I could find inserted vaginally and take an oil of oregano capsules daily for about a week. The vitamin C will work overnight and the oil of oregano acts as somewhat of an antibiotic to keep it gone. I have read that theven vitamin C has given some woman a yeast infection but I haven’t had that issue. I only take the oil of oregano for a week because any longer than that I get diarrhea… I hope this helps someone.

    Hey all,
I’m SOOO glad I found this site! The past 3 months, I have been getting BV. I was tested by the gyno and given metro gel 3 times and it still comes back. I don’t have the itchiness or grayish discharge (mine is still clear) but I do have a smell (not really fishy) but I can’t stand it. I love having sex and the past few months it has gone downhill since having this. I don’t want to right now ? After about a year of not having sex, I just starting dating someone a few months ago too (which I’m linking to why I’m getting BV) I’m embarrassed and feel I can smell it even when sitting get on a couch. Anyways…we all are here, bc we are sooo done with it! I am such a clean freak and I just don’t know why I keep getting this. I am totally trying the ACV baths …I’ve been taking probiotics as well! I want to have sex again! I’m so frustrated! Thank you for all your comments….I hope everyone will find what works for them and get relief and be rid of this nasty infection.

I recently gained a new sexual partner and within days noticed the symptoms. I came across a few different sites for remedies. The method I chose was soaking a tampon in organic extra virgin coconut oil and then adding 3-4 drops each of tea tree and oregano essential oil and then inserting. I left in for about 2 hrs and did this for about 3 days. The odor and discharge is gone but I still feel something’s not quite right with my “girl” just yet. I am taking a bath tonight with tea tree drops added in and will try acv either tomorrow or the following day. But aside from the “something’s just not right” feeling, I’m happily “normal” again.

    Dear ladies,

I’m glad I stumbled across this site. I was diagnosed with BV (bacterial vaginosis) two years ago and it has not gone away. Some ladies posted that they were infected after having an IUD inserted and I think that is what happened to me as well. I had never had any vaginal issues prior and suddenly after having an IUD inserted there is now this condition. I believe the IUD impacts the vaginal flora in some way. I’m in my mid-thirties and married. My husband is (and has ever been) my only sexual partner. I didn’t have any noticeable symptoms except for a lot of discharge, which I didn’t actually notice. My doctor noticed it during my annual pap smear, ran some tests (she initially suspected an STD) and diagnosed it as BV. I was and am still quite shocked. I lead a healthy lifestyle (exercise, nutrition, no tobacco, no alcohol) so any medical issue is surprising. I didn’t have any redness, itching and no odor that I could tell, but I do have to wear pantyliners everyday and change them frequently. My doctor said that the excessive discharge is indeed a symptom. A different doctor told me to eat yogurt as a possible remedy. I eat yogurt for breakfast several times a week but I still have the BV. Since my initial diagnosis, I have taken four rounds of two different antibiotics (two rounds of Flagyl, two rounds of clindamycin–I’m unsure of the spelling–one in suppository form and one in pill form). The doctor even prescribed two of these rounds to my poor husband. I’m interested in finding out if these natural remedies are effective. I don’t want to keep pumping my body with antibiotics. The worse part is that my husband had to take them too.

I have a question to the readers of this site: many women state that after using the natural remedies, the BV is gone. I would like to know how they know this for certain. Are they going to the doctor for lab work? I’ve been to the doctor three times over the past few years and I have lab results performed which scientifically prove that the infection is still there. Is it just that the external symptoms are gone (odor, itching) or that they have gone to the doctor and had some lab tests performed?

If I return to the doctor for more lab results (I recently finished round 4 of antibiotics) and if it is found that I am still infected, I will experiment with the natural remedies described on this website.

Thanks for reading my post. I wish all of you good health!

I’m 18 and I’ve had the same sexual partner. The first two times we had intercourse I was fine but after the last time I noticed something was wrong. I knew that either coconut oil or tea tree oil was good for pretty much EVERYTHING. I’ve been diluting tea tree oil applying it and also soaking a tampon in coconut oil and the smell and irritation is GONE. I’ve been feelings gross and embarrassed lately but I feel normal again. Also Rephresh gel helps too. This works for me and I hope this can help a lot of other woman going through this situation and gain your confidence back. Since this isn’t harmful and helps balance your pH I feel like regular and a few days a week doing this will keep BV gone FOR GOOD! I hope this helps !!

I can’t stand the fishy smell and I’m embarassed with the smell every time I have sex. Can someone help me which one is the quickest and most effective home remedies?

  77. LP says:

I used to be prone to VB, UTI’s and yeast infections (the terrible cycle of the two) and was constantly being prescribed antibiotics that whack out your flora. After explaining my troubles with my Doc she prescribed me boric acid suppositories, et voila! Within a few days the issues were relieved! I experienced a lot of pain from my BV for some reason (doc thought it could be a deeper yeast infection) and both the pain and smell were gone fairly quickly.

Over the years since then, I’ve kept up on a probiotic-heavy diet– fermented pickles, sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha, kefir, yogurts and kevasse to help balance the intestinal flora. Any sign of possible irritation down there, I wash and rinse with a bit of apple cider vinegar, and moisturize with a bit of organic cold-pressed coconut oil and a tiny drop of tea tree (which totally helps thwart acne).

Hope you all find the relief you’re looking for!

I’ve have frequent encounters with BV for the last few years. Up until recently I’d taken every antibiotic known to treat this type of infection and after years of doung so I finally got to a point where my body became immune to the treatments so now they no longer work for me (yes I took them THAT much). I decided that until I could get to the bottom of this i was no longer going to have sex, so I stuck with that decision until I few months back when I met someone, it first started with him performing oral sex on me, immediately aftet I would go urinate to flush my system, wash with a gentle unscented wash, dip a tampon in Organic ACV, insert it and let it sit for about 1 hour and it worked!!! We then moved up and started having sex, i tried the same remedy and it worked you guys so I think it’s worth a try. On top of all of this I would also recommend drinking PLENTY OF WATER, it works wonders for our bodies! Good luck ladies!

Since drinking apple cider vinegar its all gone. 3 or 4 teaspoon in a glass of water, once in the morning and once at night I’m so used to the taste now I drink it during the day in hot water. Excellent stuff.. Try it.

Alright… I took a bath with apple cider vinegar and water for 2 days, feel like it didn’t work. After that i decided you know what let me just not use a loofah to scrub myself. And i think not using it for these past 2-3 days is helping me a lot. I’ve been using the same loofah for too long and i think that was what was causing my vag to smell. It hasn’t been smelling like anything down there. It’s starting to smell/feel like a normal vagina again. Usually after i shower the smell would come right back. But this has been the longest i’ve gone without it smelling. I’m feeling pretty good

I had bv and yeast infections for yrs. I had a heavy period with vaginal odor for 1 wk. then bloody spotting and vaginal order for 2 wks, then 1 wk. free of problems .(spotting & smell). Then of course it started over again the next week .This was my life for 7 yrs. The whole thing started when I had my fallopian tubes tied. Finally my Dr. told me I needed a partial hysterectomy, which left in my ovaries. I was 39 and had no desire to have more children, as I already had two girls. OMG it was a miracle it was all gone. I am now 68 and I rarely have bv or yeast infections.
