Gout is a type of arthritis that can affect different body parts like the ears, small joints on the hands, wrists, ankles or knees. Symptoms frequently include acute pain, swelling, intense tenderness and inflammation in the joints.

gout

The exact cause is unknown, but a high amount of uric acid in the body is one of the reasons. Some other possible causes are genetics, excessive consumption of alcohol, lack of physical exercise, excessive protein intake and too much stress.

Gout is linked to other types of health problems, such as hypertension, diabetes, and uric acid kidney stones, so it is important to get proper medical treatment. In addition, some easy-to-follow home treatments can promote healing and provide symptom relief.

home remedies for gout

Here are the top 10 home remedies for gout.

Contents

  • 1. Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 2. Ginger Root
  • 3. Baking Soda
  • 4. Lemon Juice
  • 5. Cherries
  • 6. Epsom Salt
  • 7. Bananas
  • 8. Apples
  • 9. Activated Charcoal
  • 10. Cold Water

1. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar, which is used to treat headaches and acid stomach, also helps treat gout and arthritis. The acidity in apple cider vinegar will help relieve acute pain. You can also add honey to the remedy to boost the body’s anti-inflammatory response.

DIY ACV Remedy for Gout

  1. Mix one teaspoon of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar in a glass of water.
  2. Drink it two to three times daily.

If you find this remedy helpful, you can increase the dosage of apple cider vinegar to up to two tablespoons.

2. Ginger Root

The anti-inflammatory properties present in ginger root can be very helpful in relieving pain and inflammation. There are many ways to use ginger root in the treatment of gout.

Advertisements
  • Mix equal amounts of fenugreek powder, turmeric powder and dried ginger root powder (sonth). Have one teaspoon of this mixture along with warm water. Take it twice daily.
  • You can simply add ginger root in cooking recipes, or eat a small, raw piece of ginger root daily.
  • You can also add one-half teaspoon of ginger root to one cup of boiling water and mix it well. Drink this solution at least once daily.
  • Another option is to make a paste of ginger root with a little water and apply this paste on the affected area. Leave it on for about half an hour. Do this once daily.

3. Baking Soda

One significant factor contributing to gout is an increase of uric acid in the body. Baking soda can help lower the amount of uric acid, giving you relief from the pain.

  1. Mix one-half teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water.
  2. Drink this solution four times a day but not more than that.
  3. Continue up to two weeks.

If you are above 60 years, do not take more than three times in a day. Also, ignore this remedy if you suffer from hypertension.

4. Lemon Juice

To get relief from gout pain, it is essential to alkalize the body and neutralize the excess uric acid in blood stream. This can be done easily with fresh lemon juice and baking soda. Along with lemon juice, also eat other fruits rich in vitamin C to strengthen the body tissues.

  • Mix the juice of one lemon with one-half teaspoon of baking soda. Let it sit for a few seconds until the fizzing stops, and then mix it in a glass of water. Drink it immediately.
  • Another option is to add the juice of half a lemon to a glass of water and drink it three times a day.

5. Cherries

Cherries, whether sweet or sour, can also be very helpful in treating gout due to their antioxidant properties. Cherries also contain anthocyanins, which can reduce inflammation as well as minimize gout flare-ups.

  • For gout patients, eating 15 to 20 cherries a day is highly recommended. For better results, start your day with some cherries.
  • Another option is to drink a glass of black cherry juice daily. You can also add a few minced garlic cloves in it.

6. Epsom Salt

Epsom salt is another useful ingredient for home treatment of gout and other forms of arthritis. The high amount of magnesium present in Epsom salt will also improve the condition of your heart and lower high blood pressure. Soaking the affected body part in warm water mixed with Epsom salt relaxes aching muscles and relieves pain.

Advertisements
  1. For a leisurely bath, add two cups of Epsom salt to warm bath water.
  2. Soak your body in it until the water starts losing heat.
  3. Do this once a week. If you have severe gout, you can try it two or three times a week.

7. Bananas

bananas

Bananas are also very effective in treating gout. The high potassium content in bananas will help convert uric acid crystals into liquid form that will be flushed out of the body later through urination. Bananas also contain moderate amounts of vitamin C, which can be very effective in managing swelling and pain.

  • Simply eat one or two bananas daily, and soon you will notice improvement in your condition.
  • Another option is to add one ripe banana to one-half cup of yogurt. This will also help to keep diarrhea away.

8. Apples

apples

It is very common to hear people say, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” It’s a good, healthy habit to eat at least one apple daily, especially when you have gout.

Experts suggest eating an apple after each meal. The malic acid present in apples will help neutralize uric acid in the body and thereby relieve gout pain and inflammation. If you do not like to eat apples, you can try apple juice. Along with an apple, it is also a good idea to eat raw carrots daily.

9. Activated Charcoal

activated charcoal

Activated charcoal is known to absorb uric acid; hence, it can be safely used for gout treatment. Those suffering from gout should take a charcoal bath twice or three times a week.

  • Mix one-half cup of charcoal powder with some water until it forms a paste. Put the paste in a tub and add more water. Soak your affected body part for at least half an hour. This remedy is a good solution for gout in the ankle joint or big toe.
  • For other affected body parts, make a charcoal paste and apply it on the skin. Leave it on for half an hour; then rinse it off with lukewarm water.
  • Alternatively, you can take activated charcoal capsules orally to relieve gout pain and inflammation. Consult your doctor before using this option.

10. Cold Water

running water

Placing the affected area in cold water will reduce swelling as well as pain. When you have gout, do not use ice directly on the skin; it can damage the skin and make your condition worse.

  • Immerse the inflamed, swollen joint in cold water for 10 to 15 minutes. Repeat the process several times a day.
  • You can use an ice pack for about 15 minutes, but wrap it in a towel before placing it on the affected area. Do this twice a day. Avoid excess use of ice packs because it can lead to crystallization of uric acid.

So, if you are suffering from gout, simply try these natural remedies to get relief from the pain and inflammation. Bear in mind, there is no quick cure. Time and determination are required to treat gout.

I get gout attacks quite bad but when I have about 1/2 litre a day it reduces the attacks. It’s probably excessive but works for me. Only issue we can only get it for about $11 per litre. Expensive but worth it.

If you ground up flax seed and take 2 tablespoons each morning you’ll be free of any episodes, the flax seed kills the inflammation so you won’t have to worry about the so called gout again. Haven’t had any issues since taking the flax seed.

I am a gout+ uric acid patient for the last 7 years and I am just 32 years old. I get intense pain from the affected areas like leg joints, ankle. Prior to this year my gout+ uric acid pain persisted for 3-4 days but this time it’s been a week I am suffering from the pain though it has reduced as comapred to the first and second day. My question is as mentioned in the blog to eat lot of bananas but bananas incrases your body weight due to it’s high calorie content as I don’t do too much of physical activity. Is it really worth eating one banana in a day and don’t you think it will add body weight if taken daily ? Also I am taking Zyloric 300 medicine once a day to reduce uric acid content but it seems it is not working at all these days what it used to be before. Please suggest.

If you are still having problems, try the baking soda. That works miracles as it reduces the acid in the body. It can cure many aches and pain. Look up the baking soda for cancer cure. This is like a wonder drug…

      • jon says:

Uric acid is not an acid, its a salt, so will not respond to baking soda which is alkaline.

        • DixieDarling says:

Jon what would you take all natural to balance the acidic levels & uric acid levels? Obviously, you understand the Chemistry of the Human Body & how things break down & react. Your input will be greatly appreciated. Thank .

        • Dan says:

acid levels in your body are creating the salts from your liver in turn uric acid Jon . That why you want to alkaline you blood out to stop producing salts . You are right kinda

        • Stephen says:

Baking soda will lower the acid level in the body. It’s like having sweet and sour, too much sweeet or too much sour not good but just the right balance is good

    • Deborah says:

Try apple cider vinegar – google it. you can use a dessert spoon of apple cider vinegar with a dessert spoon of honey in a glass of warm water. This makes it taste like a refreshing drink. You can drink it 3 times a day. You can reduce the amount of honey (just because it’s a sugar) when your use to the taste.

I started taking ACV with honey (1 tablespoon of each in 8-10 oz.warm water)
this morning was my second treatment and already getting some relief . I have tried Colchine as prescribed by a doctor and also Alopurinal but they did nothing but increase the pain . I will let you know my progress over the next few days . Better than paying for a Doctor and Chemicals which always have side effects.

I was in so much pain a year ago, I paid $30 for a secret home remedy at 3:00am one morning. It was a list simular to this one. I tried the backing soda and the pain was gone in couple hours. I had been in severe pain for two weeks. The medicine the doctor had given wasn’t working. Arm and hammer and double the dose they have listed for heartburn. Granted the remedy might make your blood pressure go up a little bit, but so is the pain your already in.

Hi all, I am also a sufferer of gout since many years but it is under control now. One thing is that if you have an acute attack of gout, then take a medicine called colchicine 0.5 mcg 2 tablets immediately and two before bed. This med is written in most Leaflets of allopurinol tablets like zyloric or Loric. This med reduces inflamation of only gout. If you are drinking alcohol restrict to 30 ml – 60 ml max with lots of water. do not touch beer or even wine (many website tell you to drink wine). hope this is useful.

Its been a month nd a half nw since the op nd I was told to give him ACV. He’s on it for about 2 weeks nw, bt I hav noticed that a whitish fluid is continously flowing from his open wound, the wound is however nt septic nd is healing up nicely, I would like to know if this is all the gout that’s in his body that’s coming out through the wound, cause there is a tiny hole that’s still healing up? Please can somebody give me sum advice on all of this. Thanks

You must get the organic kind that contains the “mother” (nasty looking sediment at the bottom)
Just shake it and you’re fine. Bragg’s® is a popular brand easy to find at any major food market.
It might be a little more expensive, but it’s not pasteurized, so the good bacteria is still in tact.

I’m a registered nurse here in California who started suffering gout as soon as I turned 40. My family runs on arthritis and other sorts of intractable back pain. When it started hitting me (mainly on my feet), I brushed it off and just took ibuprofen 800 mg 3 times a day, cool saline soaks which would give me relief. It would last for 2 to 3 days then would subside. It comes back once or twice every 6 months while I watch my diet carefully. Over the next 2 years, it hit me about 3 times. The worst was about 4 months ago where it lingered for 2 weeks. Strange. My doctor wanted me to take colchicine which I did. The effect on me was minimal to moderate. I still go to work but with an obvious limp. Sometimes I cannot go to work at all for a few days. I got tired of it and started doing my “research” on the internet until I came about this article. So I tried apple cider vinegar 2 tsp mixed in fruit juice and 1 tsp of honey in a glass. Drink it 2x a day. Oftentimes I would just dip my dish on ACV 2-3 a day, then take vitamin C (also a uricosuric) caplets 500 mg twice a day as well. That proved to be a MIRACLE. I started peeing more cloudy urine over the next 3 days, and my pain is completely gone. So far it has not hit me again and hopefully for the rest of my ACV/vitamin C drinking days. No my urine has cleared up, but occasionally when I eat a high protein/purine diet, it becomes cloudy again. I am in no way connected to any apple cider vinegar manufacturing company or any vitamin C company. I am writing this because just like what I want my patients to feel in the hospital, I want people here to find relief in that very physically limiting condition. I have not taken a single ibuprofen or colchicine pill since I started the ACV/vitamin C regimen (on my own). My doctor has nothing to say about it except write it down and saying “come back to my office if you need something else”.

I made a baking soda bread with one tablespoon of baking soda to one cup of flower, an egg, two table spoons of sugar, pinch of salt and a cup of black berrys. It did taste awfull, but it lasted better than just putting soda in water. It really worked best after my gout had peaked and quickly reduced swelling that day or two. I also made my morning tea with dried alfalfa from my garden to wash it down with.

I have been taking 600 Mg of Celery seed extract 3 times a day along with Black Cherry Concentrate 1000 Mg twice a day. I have had Chronic Gouty Arthritis for 35 years and is severe in Hips, Knees and Ankles. No Prescribed meds have helped. they only make it worse. Why do you just don’t like tablets. They are gel caps. They work great. Celery and Cherry Juice work great when I do get gout. I haven’t had an episode now for 3 months. I was getting it every month. I am on a NO PURINE DIET. Mine is also caused by preservatives in food. I do eat a lot of salads, but I am starting to look like a Bunny Rabbit!!! Three things I hated to give up were Pork, Coffee and tea. Waking up without Coffee is still hard, but I associate gouty food with pain and I don’t ever eat it again. Look up PURINES on WEBMD and don’t eat ANY of foods listed. It seems to have helped me. Good Luck.

I had a gout with extreme pain.An Ayurvedic specialist suggest a remedy which I tried and really worked. The ingredient is very simple, take a raw papaya weighing approx 200 gms and 15 guava leaves clean it with water. Thereafter cut the raw papaya into pieces with its seeds in it and please note do not wash it again.Take one liter of water put the pieces of papaya with guava leaves boil it till the one liter water reduces to half liter. Cool the half liter and drink, repeat it twice to have atleast one liter a day. You will find relief in a day or two.

One night while I was holidaying in San Jose,I got a severe pain in my big toe such that ,it was unbearable even to use my cover sheet. First thing in the morning, I
Googled and and found that two tsps of Apple Cider Vinegar with one tsp of honey in a glass f water would cure it.
Well I had it three times that day and it was gone. I can swear by this.
Back home I had tests, and because Uric Acid was high was given alluprinol.
Well I use alluprinol and do not have these bouts of gout.

i had my first attack when i was 30. May be its due to canned foods and stuff or alot of read meat i dont know, it runs in my family as well. But i got it way earlier than my father.
I got the second attack 3 months later and 3rd another 3 months. Then i started having baby spinach, celery, 1/2 lemon and 1 tbl spoon ACV. I did not had gout for almot 1.5 years and had a recent attack just few days back only because i stopped consuming this smoothie. I do try to stay away from red meat, but i do consume it once or twice a month. I eat chicken and eggs twice a week. Apart from that i guess my recipie is working good.

This is interesting, I have had gout in the past-big toe. Drank montmorency cherry juice and it was gone.Last winter, same foot was bitten by something, guessing spider, swelling with a little sore that got bigger the next day. It eventually went away. Now next fall I’ve had gout pain in big toe and in the ball of my foot for the last 2-3 months. I have drank about $100 worth of these cherries and nothing. Hope this spider didn’t screw me up here. Gonna try ACV next, any comments?

I twisted my ankle a few days ago but gout popped up too… Is there a thing when trauma is caused to an area or joint can set it off ? Well this has happened twice. I ate a huge steak as well lol… Now I’m paying… Lemon juice and baking soda is my best home made remedy yes it really works, I eat lots of cherries and berries too… Dehydration is a fact too..

Thank you so much for the good info. I started to feel the pain in my wrist on thurs then come Fri a full gout attack was on. About two months ago I had an attack that took me out of work for three days. This time I was happy it was just before the weekend. Well my twelve year old son noticed the pain I was in and asked how he could help me so I told him to search the net for remedies. He then told me about the lemon juice with soda, which I had never heard of! He prepared the juice for me as I was getting ready for a long night of pain, discomfort, and no sleep. I drank the juice as directed and withing two hours I notice the difference. I was able to get some sleep and woke up with very little discomfort. I took the time to post this comment so that I could thank who ever posted this info and to help any other readers out there who are searching for relief.

What type of meats and seafood can I eat which will not cause a flare up of gout? Is red wine also a no, no? I am a social drinker but after reading the results here I see that what I am mixing my vodka with the juices have a lot of sugar fructose! I will need to stop using them. This is my first gout flare up but I lost my job over it because I lost 3 days of work due to the pain of not being able to walk and the side effects of the medicine. As my previous employer only allowes 4 sick days a year for that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kathy – I think you should name and shame your former employer because the older an employee gets, the more chances of illness will occur. It is better to take time off and not spread any illness throughout the company. Your former employee is not exempt from illness and their turn will come and I bet they will take off more than four paltry days. That is disgusting! Poor you losing your job, what a mean employer

I have been a gout sufferer for close on 17 years now. I have tried all sorts of experiments now and the one that suits me the best is apple cider vinegar. Every night before i go off to bed, I take 1 tablespoon of ACV and mix it with a glass of sparkling water and to kill the unsavoury taste of ACV, I put an orange flavoured effervescent vitamin c tablet and enjoy a pleasant , healthy and refreshing “beverage” drink. Job done!!!! I have not had an attack now for the last 15 months.

I believe gout is more prevalent these days, due to the increase in sugar intake. It’s in all processed foods. Fructose not only produces uric acid through the liver, but also inhibits excretion through the kidneys. A twofold approach in raising uric acid levels. Please avoid added sugar.

    Ramesh Ahuja

I am on an anticoagulant medication due to having undergone AVR ( Aotic Valve Regurgisation ) surgery in Jan. 2000 at AIIMS in Delhi. Have suffered a severe attack of swollen joints with acute pain after 3-4 years of surgery but on analyzing the same was cured with Zyloric as per recommendations of a good physician and following a diet with no intake of purine containing diets such as Cauliflower, Brinjals, Pumpkin and Mushrooms. Also I was advised to consume no or least Protines such as whole grain pulses, Rajmah/ white chane etc. It cured me of the problem almost fully and the status persisted for about another 5-6 years. It was then all of a sudden that one morning in the month of Aug. 2012 that I was immobilized altogether, not even able to go to the Bath room at my own. Since then I am suffering from the excess of Uric Acid ( beyond 5.0 ml ) which causes severe pain in my Ankle joints and due to which I can’t walk for more than a Km. or so at a stretch or can’t stand for more than half an hour at a stretch. I have to take a rest or break of 10-15 minutes for being able to walk or stand again. I have tried all the possible home remedies and allopathic medicines as recommended by any Ayurvedic or Allopathic practioner, except the ones told/advised above, such as ACV or Baking soda. Otherwise I have been taking freshly extracted Amla juice with honey, daily in the Morning since long ( the richest source of Vitamin C ) till it is available in the Market, otherwise I soak dried Amla in water for 24 hrs. and take the clear soaked water after mixing with a teaspoon of Honey in it.
Can any body share his/her similar experience of Goutic Pain due to high Uric Acid?
Doctors say it is due to in ability of our digestion system to break up the protiens we intake, thus leading to excess of purines causing formation of excess uric Acid. If it is so, then how can any home remedy cure this situation effectively, is not understood.
Any technically and logical remedy/suggestion shall be most appreciated.

Ohh Dear God, Help me cure my stubborn Ignorant self.

I’m 42 and first encountered a gout attack when I was 40. At the time i was drinking 1 bottle of Red Wine per night. This day i was dehydrated and fitting a Kitchen. I was working outside in the summer sun. On this day my toe joint started to hurt. I thought it was my steel toe cap boot. The next day it was worse and it became difficult to walk. The 3rd day was excruciating. I could not sleep, or walk or have the bed sheets touch my foot. I did nothing at all to fix this problem. I didn’t go to Docs or change my diet. Within a week the symptoms disappeared, but there has always been a slight discomfort or lack of flexibility in my toe. Over the last 2 years I am still drinking 7 bottles of Red Wine per week. My toe joint is getting bigger (Tophi).
This Saturday the pain slowly started again. By Sunday It was becoming difficult to walk. By Sunday evening it was becoming very painful. By Monday it was full blown Gout attack. (but I have not drank since Friday and it is now Tuesday). My blood test from 2 years ago showed High Uric Acid levels.

I have been drinking Green tea, Lemon Juice, Fresh ginger Root. Baking Soda, Cellery Drink. Forever Living Aloe Vera Juice. Turmeric. Apple Cider Vinegar. Plenty of Water. I drank so much water and took so much of these ingredients yesterday that I had to run to the toilet!!!!!

I am still In agony!!! I did not get to bed till 5am this morning but could not sleep for the pain. Today I will keep tying with also bananas, cherries. Lets hope today is the day it starts to ease off.
