Fever blisters, also known as cold sores, are caused by the herpes simplex type 1 virus. An outbreak usually occurs on or around the mouth and typically heals within two to three weeks.
Fever blisters can be a lifelong irritant, since the virus remains dormant in the body throughout your life. Outbreaks can be triggered by stress, overexposure to sunlight, hormonal changes, trauma to the skin, or a weakened immune system.
Fever blisters are painful, accompanied by tingling and burning sensations along with swelling and inflammation. They appear as a cluster of small, white blisters and typically manifest on the same spot or area whenever the virus gets activated. Getting fever blisters can be a real pain and can even spoil your beauty.
There are many over-the-counter medicines for fever blisters, but they are not always effective and can take a lot of time. Instead, you can try some simple, natural home remedies that can help provide relief in just four to five days.
For best results, use these remedies as soon as you notice the initial tingling sensation. It will help reduce the duration and severity of an outbreak.
Here are the top 10 home remedies to get rid of fever blisters.
Contents
1. Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil can quickly and effectively treat fever blisters due to its antiviral properties.
- Dilute tea tree oil by combining one part oil and three parts water. Using a cotton ball, apply the diluted tea tree oil on the affected area three times a day. Within a few days, the fever blister should heal completely.
- Alternatively, mix equal amounts of tea tree oil and olive oil. Add a little bit of eucalyptus oil. Apply this solution on the blister three times daily for four to five days.
2. Whole Milk
Another very simple treatment for fever blisters is whole milk. Whole milk contains immunoglobulins and calcium, which help fight the virus that causes fever blisters. Plus, it has a type of fat known as monocaprin with antiviral properties. Milk also helps accelerate the healing process.
- Soak a cotton ball in cold whole milk and apply the milk on the affected area. Leave it on for about 10 minutes. The cold milk will reduce the pain as well as soothe the tingling sensation. Do this several times a day for three to four days.
- Also, drink a glass of warm whole milk with one teaspoon of turmeric in it two times a day for a week. Turmeric will help reduce the pain associated with fever blisters.
3. Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is a natural disinfection and hence very effective in killing bacteria that may infect the fever blisters. The herpes virus that causes fever blisters thrive in moist, warm environments; using hydrogen peroxide will keep the affected area dry and free of moisture.
- Dip a cotton ball in 3% hydrogen peroxide solution and dab it over the blisters. Leave it on for a few minutes and then rinse the area with a wet washcloth and pat dry. Repeat this remedy three or four times a day for two to three days.
- Alternatively, make a paste of two crushed aspirins and one teaspoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide. Apply the paste on the affected area using a cotton ball. Leave it on for just two to three minutes. Clean the area with lukewarm water. Do this once daily for not more than two days.
4. Ice
Cold compresses can alleviate pain significantly, as well as reduce the swelling and redness associated with fever blisters. It will also prevent the condition from spreading.
- Wrap a few ice cubes in a washcloth.
- Place it over the affected area for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Repeat this every three to four hours.
- After each session, apply a thick layer of lemon balm ointment to the area.
This remedy works best when used as soon as you feel the initial tenderness or a tingling sensation on your lip, which usually happens during the first few hours or a couple of days before the blisters develop.
5. Garlic
Garlic is one of those ingredients that you can rely upon when you want to get rid of fever blisters as fast as possible. Garlic has enzymes that work as antiviral agents that help treat fever blisters. Plus, its antibacterial properties will help disinfect the area and decrease the healing time.
- Gently crush two to three garlic cloves to make a paste.
- Apply it to your fever blisters.
- Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Repeat the process three times a day for two days.
Warning: Garlic is potent and may sting a bit when applied.
6. Licorice
Licorice has an active ingredient called glycyrrhizin that has antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties that make this herb an effective treatment for fever blisters. It will minimize redness and swelling and also speed up the healing process.
- Make a thick paste of one tablespoon of licorice root powder and one-half teaspoon of water. Dab the paste on the affected area using a cotton swab. Leave it on for a few hours. Reapply it three to four times a day for several days until the blisters heal completely.
- You can also drink licorice root tea or take supplements to speed up the healing process.
Note: Those who have high blood pressure should avoid licorice remedies.
7. Tea Bags
Tea contains tannic acid, an astringent that has antiviral properties and hence can be used to get rid of fever blisters quickly. Also, tea has many vitamins and antioxidants that will help heal the blisters.
- Place a tea bag (black or green tea) in one cup of boiling water for one minute.
- Remove the tea bag and allow it to cool.
- Now press the tea bag on the affected area for a few minutes.
- Repeat this five or six times a day for three to four days.
This remedy will give you instant relief from pain and discomfort.
8. Toothpaste
Toothpaste contains ingredients like baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol and menthol that can help dry out blisters quickly. Plus, it has sodium lauryl sulfate that can help reduce the size of the blisters in just one or two days.
- Apply a little bit of white toothpaste on the affected area. Leave it on overnight, or at least for two hours. Wash it off with a damp washcloth and then apply petroleum jelly. Follow this remedy once daily until the blisters heal completely.
- Mix one teaspoon of white toothpaste and one-half tablespoon of salt. Using a cotton swab, apply the paste on the fever blisters before going to bed. Leave it on overnight and rinse it off with lukewarm water the next morning. Repeat daily as needed.
Note: For treating fever blisters, only use white toothpaste. Do not use whitening, gel, or colored toothpastes.
9. Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is another very effective way to treat fever blisters fast. It has natural healing powers and antibacterial properties that help disinfect the infected area. Plus, this herb is known to speed up healing and also reduce pain and inflammation.
- Cut an aloe vera leaf to extract the gel.
- Apply the gel on the affected area with your fingertips. Allow it to dry on its own.
- Then clean the area with lukewarm water and pat dry with a soft towel.
- Repeat the process several times a day for about three to four days.
This remedy will keep the infected area clean and soft so that the skin doesn’t split open, which can cause further infection.
10. Yogurt
Yogurt contains lysine that fights the virus that causes fever blisters. It even plays an important role in preventing the virus from becoming active. You can make an egg and yogurt facial mask to soothe and heal the blisters.
- Mix one egg, one cup of yogurt and one tablespoon of honey to form a thick paste.
- Apply the paste on the fever blisters using a cotton ball.
- Leave it on for half an hour, then rinse it off with lukewarm water.
- Repeat the process once daily as needed.
Also, try to eat one cup of yogurt two or three times a day to get rid of fever blisters quickly.
Be careful not to touch the fever blisters, and make sure to wash your hands regularly so that you do not spread this virus. Fever blisters are contagious, so it is highly recommended not to share lip gloss, drinks or food with others while you are having an outbreak.

Its all about the tea tree oil. Seriously. From what I’ve seen with people it works the best by far out of all the options out there.
Actually I did all kinds of remedies from the toothpaste to the salt and to the baking soda and even tea bags it’s all effective actually but it’s a but slower than a tea tree oil I just dump a little with a cottonbuds then after awhile it dries out. TEA TREE OIL IS THE BEST if u want the healing fast 🙂
I’m trying peroxide first and wait for two or three min and than I’m applying Tea tree oil and I will see how it does I will let u know how it does
Yes- thanks for sharing. I took your advice – gone in 2 days!
Yes! The tea tree oil works. So happy to find this information. In the past it has always taken 3 weeks for me to be rid of the scabs the blisters caused. Looked awful! Then my lip would look scarred for weeks after the horrid scab finally came off! Anyway, this remedy fixed All that. No scabs, no scarring & the fever blister is completely gone after 4 days of treatment with the tea tree oil & olive oil mixture. Yeah!
EXACTLY its the tea tree & olive oil MIXED with steady application whenever you think about it that completely heals it AWESOME!
I woke up Saturday morning with a fever blister I was treating it with alcohol and abrevia. Until I found this site so Saturday night I put garlic on there and you can definitely tell it was working by Sunday it was feeling a little better but by Sunday evening I went and got some tee tree and it start drying it out quickly but I just dap some on q- tip and start applying it by Sunday night it was drying out completely and forming a scape on there. It truly works I didn’t notice you were suppose to dilute the tee tree without diluting it , it four times quicker so I have to say in just about 24 hours it doesn’t look like I even had a fever blister at all.
I must admit the tea tree oil works the fastest… I was using garlic for about a day and it worked a little however it was still swollen and kept ozing… so when i read the comments I went and got me a bottle of tea tree and its completely dried out and I only applied it twice since I got it… so I’m sure it will be gone by tomorrow… this post saved my life… I’m using nothing but tea tree oil going forward!!!
Tea Tree & Olive Oil mixed AMAZING results heals what fever blister? LoL
Okay, so I’ve gotten these all my life .. Sometimes once in three years, but recently I was exposed to sun with no protection and I have four huge ones! It’s awful an I just started school. I’m trying toothpaste now and going get tea oil. Would love any advice and love this site! Gives me hope.. ??
i have a fever blister, i think, stemming from my left nostril down to above my lip. it is about an inch long, painful and the left side of my nostril is swollen and smaller than the right nostril. the left side of my upper lip is slightly swollen–kinda feels like post dentist work with Novocain except that i can still drink water and not slobber it all over me. 🙂 i have never had a sore like this under my nose before and don’t know what to do, besides tell the general public to “turn away! i’m hideous.”
i have a purple stain or something on back, about the size of a silver $, and it’s been there for a few months.
does anyone know if there is any correlation? i feel so yucky.
As I type this right now,I have them all over my hands! I have the flu right now so,I’m going to try the milk.
I LOVE THIS SITE!!!! I LOOK SO NICE NOW THAT I DID ALL THE REMEDYS!!!!!!!
ok so i have one right now and i hate it but kinda used to it…. i just wish there was a faster way like 24 hours to get rid of this nasty thing…. i feel so sad right now since i ahve it
St. John’s Wort liquid extract also works. As soon as I feel the tingle from the fever blister, I apply it (do this several times a day). It usually keeps it from breaking out. The only downside, it stains clothes so be careful.
Try Honey .works the fastest!
How do you apply the honey and how often
i have a 4year old she gets a fever and then next day fever blister and then her botton lip crack open, and starts to bleed.well the tea oil and olive oil help.
Honey
Eish I hate this thing, I look like an alien. I feel so sad. Hope the remedies will help, am going try them out now. Thank you guys.
I understand that I also have one right now and it is so embarrassing when you have to go outside of the house. But I have tried the tea tree oil and it works wonders for me as well but I just bought some cloved garlic and I am going to make a paste with it and try it as well . I am pretty much at the point where I try any and everything to make it go away faster
I have this fever blister prblm I m fed up of this its very painic
Thanks alot for ur awesome remedies
God bless u
I tried this last week, and it worked!! Take a used and cooled damp teabag and hold it gently on the cold sore for a minute or so, two or three times a day for two or maybe three days and that should do the trick. It’s not much bother. Give it a go. Good luck!!
Form a paste of asperin, cool tea, and honey & apply a few times a day for 20 min. It should be gone within 2 days.
l like this site
Yes its realy worked fever blisters is gone
witch one did you use?
I know this sounds gross but …..it works try preparation h just put a little on a q tip and rub on at the feel of the fever blister
When I feel this tingling, I put toothpaste on it for a quick recovery and only have a small blister or blisters. I leave it on over night for best results. Natural healing.
OMG Thanx, I always get fever blisters and they last for weeks.I hade gotton one in the night and saw this and tried it.By the time i woke up it was gone!!THANKS SOO MUCH!
I’m trying the toothpaste now. Woke up yesterday with one. I took some lysine. Woke up this morning with more. Prayerfully it will work because I’m a cashier and its very embarrassing.
Am about to try these remedies.
Buttermilk applied before bedtime. I remember my aunt telling me this when I was younger and when I woke up it was gone. It was smelly, and it stung, but it worked!
Sometimes I use rubbing alcohol and it works. Also the white toothpaste before bed works great. I’m gonna try a few of these ones and if anything works out I’ll update. Good luck…these are a nightmare.
tea tree oil works fast
Hey guys, ever try putting peppermint oil on a q-tip. It takes the heat right out of the cold sore/fever blister. I get them alot from lack of sleep due to miserable restless legs:(
Marge, try magnesium supplements for the restless legs! It works great (but I still get fever blister).
I tried the peppermint oil last night. It worked wonders!!! I wish I had known about it years ago. It worked much better than the creams and meds I have taken previously. It was starting to form yesterday, and today it is practically gone. I am so amazed. Thanks a millions!
Hey.. I’ve dealt with fever blisters n cold sores LITERALLY MY ENTIRE LIFE… off and on… Sometimes it be years of not getting them and then boom one day I’ll wake up to a heavy top or bottom lip….. Lol… Anyhoo… Last month I was devastated with two…. Then of course now this month im on my fourth one in two months. Every time I get one under control damn near invisible I get another one.. Smh… Im sick of them…. I don’t know what else to do….. And no I don’t have herpes…just on of them people who unfortunately gets them.. And it not fun.. Or pretty…. Smh.. I have I one now it hurts so bad I don’t even want to touch it.. I’ll try a few of these remedies.. Hopefully they work for me too.. Thanks…
This happens to me to I have always gotten these my whole life…. But I am young and I hope I can get a handle one them me and my mom always struggle with them….. Try tea tree oil it works good… Wish I could get them to go a way faster I always get stared at in school… Any way I need help with this this site has done me good
Pop the blisters…sqeeze out liquid
Make a paste of vicks vapor rub
And meat tenderizer….seriously
It will dry up overnight
Squeezing them makes them worse a lot worse. I know decolorized iodine works good. In most cases they never come up. As long as you catch them ASAP like at the itching. I have one now bit it started while I was at work. But I do know squeezing is the wrong thing to do
Take lysine everyday for awhile and will help keep them out of your system. My daughter always had them all her life and my husband told us to use it and it does work.
Yes, you have herpes. It’s simplex 2 . I get them as bad as you do, and no, I don’t have genital herpes either. My doctor prescribed me a prescription….It’s used for genital herpes, but it works wonders for the fever blister when you get then as bad as we do. There is also a new prescription that you can take daily that PREVENTS outbreaks!!!!
Nothing to be ashamed of for anyone having genital herpes most of the population has them and don’t even know and the ones that do no take precautions and live a normal life. Most people who have genital herpes were victim from someone else having them and not telling them that they had it that’s the only downfall it’s embarrassing to tell people you have it but there’s nothing to be ashamed of 90% of the population has genital herpes
I don’t believe 90% of the population has genital herpes!
About 20% of the general population has genital herpes. Among women, it is higher, with about 25% of women having herpes. The incidence of herpes in adults is more prominent in women than men.
Herpes simplex 1 (oral herpes) is what causes fever blisters and in most cases is not sexually transmitted. Herpes simplex 2 is genital herpes, which is the one that is passed through sexual contact. I’ve read up because I’ve gotten them since as long as I can remember, and school aged kids are mean lol,
I have just used acetone and the swelling has went completely down and I just got this nasty blister this morning not only in one spot but two ugh thanks acetone and for everybodys advice
You do have the Herpes Virus . That is what causes fever blisters to pop up .
You do have herpes. I know it’s devastating but I just recently found out myself .
I woke up with a fever blister Wednesday morning. Each day it grew bigger and more painful. Not only did the fever blister get bigger, my lip was swollen, the side of my face was swollen and painful to the touch. I used some sort of ointment but it was not working. Lately I have moved to using more natural ways of healing myself. I found this website and bought myself some tea tree oil. I mixed with a part tea tree oil and part olive oil. I did not have any eucalyptus oil so I left that out. I started applying the mixture about 4-hours ago and have made 3-applications so far. It works..!! It works…!! It works…! The swelling has gone down, my lip has deflated, the pain in the side of my face is gone and I have only used it for the last 4-hours. I will be using this for some other stuff on my body as well. I will updated in a few days. I hope that the blister will be completely gone…!! Loved it..!!
I totally love this site and already the fever blister is starting to go away
Also toothpaste/salt work too mix together to make a paste and then apply to fever blister/coldsore let it sit for about 10 to 15 minutes and do this for 24 hours 2 times
works great swelling gone done within 30 min/
This is an excellent site. Oodles of good, tried and true, information. Thanks for sharing with us.
Yes it’s very pain makes you not want to do anything but I’m going to try one of theses remedies
The ice really works
I numb my lip with the ice, and then do the garlic. When my lip is numb I don’t get the stinging effects of the garlic
I don’t know about y’all, but I’m going to take a tea bag stick it in ice, add peroxide, add a dab of tea tree oil, toothpaste, aloe.. stick it to my lip and eat some yogurt followed with whole milk and a licorice stick. All at once! Lol
You made me laugh. 🙂
Being a worrier, I was wondering what if I pick the wrong remedy. It seems you might have covered them all.
I agree ❤
LOL I agree too
This site is the best I’ve found! I tried hydrogen peroxide and vanilla on Q-tips before going to bed and it was dried up in the morning. Fastest relief I’ve found. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
What kind of vanilla?
Sharise,
100% Pure Vanilla Extract. The kind found in health food/grocery stores.
I went to work with no fever blister and by the time I got off I had a very small bump. At first it didn’t tingle or itch, but I hurried to the store to get the top name brand you see on TV. I paid almost $20 for it and started putting it on every few hours. When I woke up the next morning it was a big ugly painful Klondike I was so embarrassed I didn’t want to go to work…so I found this site and boy am I glad… I tried the peroxide and the peroxide paste with the 2 aspirins….worked wonders took all the swelling down, all the fever and stuff that was in the blister disappeared and was the blister was smaller within a few hours. What’s so great about it, I already had this at home. I used the peroxide in a spray bottle to keep my lip clean and sterile. Plus I did try the peppermint oil and the tea tree oil both worked well also…also had these two products at home. I have a scab now and can’t wait until it heals and comes off …so tempted to try to take it off but I will give it a couple more days. I will stick with the peroxide for my next episode. It works for me. The best treatment I have ever had in my entire life. I use to suffer for 7-10 days using crap that didn’t work just make the blister soft and no healing properties…I paid good money for nothing. 2 days of using this for me and I am on the road to a speedier healing process…I wish I could get a refund on this bunk product I bought. Thanks for the tips….printing them out so I can have them on hand in case someone I know might need some alternatives to expensive store bought remedies, when home remedies might be all you need.
I just broke out with 2 blisters on my lip. It is very painful, but thanks to this website I have some relief. I applied
tea tree oil. Wow feels better instantly. Hopefully they heal soon.
I have prom tomorrow April 10th 2015 and I have this annoying blister on my bottom lip! 🙁 I can’t get it to go away fast enough before tomorrow and before I have my makeup done my professionals
Lysine works wonders. It’s a daily supplement you take and you shouldn’t get them or, if you do they won’t be as horrible. If I do feel one coming up I simply start doubling up on lysine taking 2-4 p/day instead of the usual 1or 2 and it shuts it down and stops it from getting worse. I have 2 yucky ones coming up now becuz I keep forgetting to get more lysine so OFF to the store I go!
Yes, I use Lysine too. I also eat yogurt and drink milk. When I do all three and stay off too many nuts snd too much chocolate and cheap bread, I never get them. Eat bread, choc and nuts and forget the regular Lysine, I get them.
Garlic is an awesome healer!!!!
Can you use garlic powder
This definitely sound too good too be true. Talk about unattractive. Oh i hope it works.
I am going to try a couple of these remedies as a last resort because nothing else really works. I have just one question if these remedies really work as effectively and quickly as it says, why is big pharma not doing any of these or something similar?
Because Big Pharma can’t patent these natural remedies. There is no money in them. They need to formulate their own unique chemical concoction in order to make $$$.
Ok so I’m gonna try the aspirin and peroxide and I was wondering if it mattered what kind of aspirin and if you use all the paste
As soon as I saw the signs of a fever blister I tried tea tree oil, ice and occasionally I used some left over Abreva. I’m on the third day and it looks like it’s pretty much done and is beginning to dry up. This article was such a big help. Thank you.
I have been getting these since I was younger and I absolutely hate them! I am going to try these and hope that they work. I have been so stressed out and was sick for a while so of course I have a huge one on my bottom lip. I know the toothpaste and peroxide and the rubbing alcohol dry it out fast but I want it to go away faster so yeah hope these work THANKS!!!!!!
I have Galic on mine right now.. It just appeared out of no where today… It stings like a wasp but, I don’t care.
So… I am so grateful I ran into this site. I get these blasting buggers all the time. One very strange thing I have found that works is spree candy. Crazy, right?! I have no idea how/why this works… One day I am out and about, I feel the tingle coming. I’m a kid at the time and am eating spree candy (the original packet) annoyed by the tingling feeling on my lip I put the spree over it for I have no idea how long…. Probably 30 minutes or so and the entire thing just went away. Just like that. Before it even prorated from the skin it went away. Since then I have “tried” to keep a roll of spree with me for these types of emergencies. A lot easier and less embarrassing than an abreva or other fever blister killing tool kit. It works, though I do find it odd myself. I haven’t had one of these for the past year. Now I have had two that appeared; and wondering if breastmilk may also work… Fruit for thought. I am now trying all these remedies myself. Cleaned the area with Peroxide, have a swab of whole milk on it. Than going to put on the Tea tree oil with peppermint, and the garlic just for good measure. At nighttime I will put on the tooth paste and maybe fit in the breastmilk in there some step of the way. Don’t know what made it go away, but just want it GONE!
THE MILK WORKS, MILK WORKS !!!!!!!! Just yesterday 7/21/15 I found this site, because I had a fever blister on my top lip, two of them and I felt very ugly, so I needed to get rid of it fast, so I decided to try the hold milk treatment, well today 7/22/15 and it’s gone , it dryed up over night, believe me it really works. So get a cotton ball soak it in cold hold milk hold it on the fever blister for 30 second 3 times that day and that’s it, repeat as often as you want to , it really work, good luck… TRIED AND PROVEN TRUE
I crushed garlic, wet a tea bag and used both at the sametime. It’s a bit uncomfortable but it worked. I’ve been doing it for the past couple of hours and it’s stopped the blister from forming.
Because it’s Big Pharma, and big illness to them equals big business. They are not in the business of healing, they are in the business of treating over and over again…
Also, thanks to you all who have tried and proven these remedies and have shared your results with us. So much appreciated! And a big thank you to the creator of this site! Thanks everyone…
Salt and Garlic are the best treatment ever
the ice help a lot
Cold Sores are the worst! I have found tea tree oil to help tons, I usually add some hydrogen peroxide in there, and coconut oil once it dries up. Tea tree oil just isn’t working as fast as I would like this time around. Does anyone feel like adding the peppermint oil makes a big difference or garlic?
You Guys! Today, I developed two blisters on my lower lip after feeling the tingle symptoms yesterday. The blisters were filling with fluid and getting ugly but still relatively small. Anyway, I first dabbed them with perioxide then witch hazel. After using those two liquids to clean the blisters I dabbed on TEA TREE OIL. I’m not kidding when I say the blisters starting disappearing right before my eyes. No joke. I yelled for my husband to come look. They are gone. I’m going to continue in the morning until I’m sure they are gone for good. But right now my whole lip feels better. And looks back to normal. Go get some of this oil. Amazing!!!!!
Where can u get tea tree oil
I’ve been having this blisters since childhood. i have a couple of it now, I’m just gonna try a few of these remedies n hope for d best.
I wish there could be a permanent cure with which its never gonna reoccur.
Wish u luck
The HP is working great and so is the Low hopefully they go away ???
All the things I have read on here usually work great site 🙂 I actually talked with my sister that is a pharmacist for the last 15 yrs and she always recommend abreva not always would work wonders for me every few yrs I got a fever blister but this time I tried it with another solution. Here I go ! Got one 14 months ago then 2 months later I am like what ? Coming again when I was younger 2 times a yr winter then summer what happen to every few yrs LOL ! Well , I kn u shouldn’t pop but I had taken alcohol placed on lip then a needle over flame till it turned red after it cooled dipped n alcohol then had tissue to catch the ozzing so u won’t spread anywhere else on your lip then put alcohol again with abreva 3 r 4 times a day. I started that Saturday morning after feeling it coming on with no tingle just sore that Fri night at 8 pm after working 12 hr night shift I started Sat. Morning and now its 3 am Tue its gone and yes , lysine works I had taken 2 pills on Sat , Sun Mon .
I’ve been dealing with fever blisters my whole life. They definitely suck. I will say this though the pressure from the fluid in the blister is what hurts most for me. I used a needle held it over the flame until it turned orange to sterilize it. I then popped the blisters immediately soaking up the fluid with sterilize gauze and then applied hydrogen peroxide with a Q tip. The pain is gone and they are already starting to scab over I did this about an hour ago. It works! Then I keep applying blistex and that helps as well or lavender oil chapstick with vitamin E. Vitamin E helps a lot when I have blisters as well!! Good luck everyone!
I noticed that I had started itching on my bottom lip area and thought it was just another pimple like normal teenagers. But this time was different. I felt the burning sensation. Then the dryness. Now, whenever I open my mouth to talk or eat, my mouth hurts MAJORLY. I tried the peroxide remedy not even three minutes ago. I hope it works.
The garlic burns badly but definitely heals quickly.
I woke up this morning and look at my lip, I had a blister on my lip not around it or above it it was on the lip. I’m not sure if its a cold sore because I heard that you usually get them above the lip.
I have always had them this time is really bad it covers my whole chin. The doctor ordered me some cream. And when I went to pick it up it was 984.00 for a 5oz tube. I can not afford that. So I found this sight last night and it had been wonderful I tried the tea tree oil and it already is better this morning. No more ozing and a lot less pain today. So I hope it’s gone soon. Thanks for helping me.
I had one to start last night so I put tea tree oil on it at bedtime. I didn’t see much difference this morning so I have been using Abrevia today with no change. I just crushed an aspirin and mixed with hydrogen peroxide and I can feel it doing something. I will try a tea bag, then vanilla, then tea tree oil and toothpaste before I go to bed. Thanksgiving is tomorrow and I’ve got to get rid of it! 🙂 Haven’t had one in almost 20 years.
I appreciate seeing all these experiences for fever blisters. I want to add my own remedy I haven’t seen anywhere else. A styptic pencil, that one uses for razor nicks, will stop them dead in their tracks, the earlier the better.
Peroxide worked wonders on my lip, nose and eye.I highly recommend peroxide 3%
Haven’t Had one in twenty years
My mom said ear wax
I just tried milk garlic and honey together . Let’s see how I feel tomorrow I need this blister to go away I look horrible can’t go nowhere . Thanks
I’m so grateful for finding this site – and especially for all the real testimonials everyone has been willing to post! It makes the thought of trying these things not so scary!
It’s amazing how fast a fever blister can come in! One day there’s a little pimple-like thing, then the next day it’s swelling the whole area and hurting like crazy!
This is the 3rd day since my little pimply thing appeared.
I’ve tried the tea tree oil w/ olive oil yesterday and today without any dramatic changes (good or bad).
This evening after work I washed the area with 3% peroxide (and did a peroxide and water mouth rinse as well – getting rid of bacteria there too!)
Then I rinsed with water and applied the cold milk (which felt great).
I also made a warm cup of milk with tumeric (I’ll continue to have these over the next couple of days as well.)
The most intense treatment was definitely the garlic – OMG! It hurt like CRAZY – I thought my skin was burning off! I stuck with it for the whole 15 minutes though. (I’m a die-hard!) Now, a few hours later, the pain is gone and the fever blister seems to be smaller and cleaner (more healed). I’m currently holding another glob of raw garlic on my lip, this time using a cold wet-ish teabag to hold it in place (and ease the pain from the garlic a bit). I’m debating whether or not I should do any other treatments before going to bed… I’ll report on my progress tomorrow.
Thank you for all the useful tips!

Normally, I use zovirax at the first sign. But this time when I went to get my script filled, a tube coat $2,500!!! The generic was $699!!! since I don’t have that kind of money for a 15 gram tube of Zovirax, I searched the internet and found this site. I bought the tea tree oil, & I didn’t delete it, & I put it directly on the fever blister. That was about 6 hours ago, and now it’s already dried up. I am so happy I found this site. All used tea tree oil from now on
Try using rubbing alcohol. It’s very effective for me .
I had fever blister for a bit I find beer helps .
I have been on this site a bunch of times and tried a few different ones, but now i used the garlic and the tea tree oil. And within 24 hrs it has changed dramatically.
I hate fever blisters and I get them on my ears you talking about painful those things ain’t no joke …But one day i found this site and fell in love Toothpaste and salt have been my two best friends they work
I have been getting fever blisters for as long as I can remember.. at least one really “good” one a year since I do not get sick that often they always pop up right after a high high fever. I always used abrevia however even with that its costly with such a tiny amount and it still lasts almost a week or longer and doesn’t help with swelling… just went out after reading this site with all of the comments and purchased tea tree oil which is half the cost of abrevia and I can already tell after my second use that its working its magic. CANNOT believe that I’ve only just found this hidden secret. TEA TREE OIL is a must. – side note there were several different options at the store and I did purchase the more expensive more pure one and I did the one drop oil three drop water and let the cotton ball soak and then applied it for about 5 mins or so and did it three times in a day.. morning, mid afternoon, early evening. Hope this helps.
I usually dab lemon juice for the tiny ones
Vinegar for the annoying bigger ones
And cutex remover on the painful huge ones

Hi all. I hate the blisters I’ve had them most of my life. They normally appear when I am stressed out. I had another breakout yesterday and I tried the toothpaste method…. it did help for about 3 hours but I noticed the blister has more fluid. I happen to have a bottle of vodka I dabbed some directly on my blister (drank some too… this thing is sore)… but after 2 hours my blister was dried out COMPLETELY; it’s day 2 and the swelling is down I keep dabbing vodka on it every 2 hours. … it really does work but it BURNS (worth it). On my way out to face the world again but VODKA Does the trick sooooooooo fast.
I am 68, looking forward to 69 in July. This is my first fever blister. After traveling to Portugal and Spain, at the end of a long flight from London my top lip started tingling. The next morning the left side of my top lip was swollen and underneath my lip showed tiny blisters. I recall the tingling started after eating a chicken Cesar sandwich served on the flight. I thought it was a allergic reaction to something in the sandwich. I went to my primary doctor who prescribed 4 pills to be taken two a day and a topical cream to be aplied every 3 hours. Almost impossible to do unless you stay indoors 24/7. This was Monday. Imagine my surprise when I found a tee tree oil remedy online. I use tree tree oil daily and keep a supply on hand at all times! I will start with tee tree oil. Hopefully my results will be as positive as those posted. I will make my way thru the list if necessary.
I have a fever blister on the inside of my lip ito my first one ever. Idk what I can use or not use for it but any help I can get I would be great full for. Thank you in an advanced
can antibiotics cause fever blister?
Peroxide has never worked for me. I have never tried tea tree / olive oil or peppermint oil, but plan on giving it a shot. I am an outdoor kind of person, so I get three or four a year mainly from exposure to the sun. I use HL30 (herpecin L), which you can buy at most drug stores for about $5. It keeps these ugly creatures down to about 7 days, providing you start using it at the burning stage before the blisters start. The blisters stay small, but do show up. Anything to keep them down to 4 or 5 days would be great. Thank you for the great tips and I do hope something on this list will truly work for me. Have a great day!
tried several.tee tree oil was best but my dr.uded a labor the next day it scared the third day the scab fell off! All gone lazors excellerate.
Tea tree oil & Olive oil is my miracle treatment!! It really works!! I will not use anything else!!
Peroxide works the best i used it this morning now its gone i never had a fever blister before thanks for the info
Okay so here I am hello and thanks for all this advice I’m 25 and have struggled with these since I was a child I usually only get one and here and there randomly threw out the year or sometimes its months and months before I get another. If I like my lips it makes them worse and worse and I usually get them from a pimple that appears and like transformers into a blister I find that if I let my lips get as dry as possible apply rubbing alcohol and store bought cold sore treatment it slowly goes away. But today for the first time ever I have like 3 or 4 and they are just swelling more and more and it’s horrible I also started my period today. I don’t have tea tree oil or whole garlic I am going to try some of these that don’t include those and will let you know how it works out. ☺ baby
It has always been my problem, whenever I had an attack of cough and flue or malaria ,it results intro fever blisters which are very painful.
Ear wax work’s really well, catch it when it first start, will not come out, it really works!!!
Comment: i bilieve this will help those that cannot afford expensive meds. mix a strong toothpaste with a lil water and salt to create a smooth paste. apply on the blister and leave for 10 minutes then wash it off. this will help dry the blister and stop it from multiplying. after washing i applied olive oil on the blister.
After only an hour of using the tea tree oil, my fever blister went from the size of texas to hardly even noticeable. TEA TREE OIL WORKS WONDERS.
Toothpaste n Salt mixture works! I put on blister las nite. I awoke the next morning applied ice hydrogen peroxide n petroleum jelly went to work. I worried some because it still felt tender. But as the day went on. The pain subsided. The blisters are gone u cannot tell I had it unless I mention it! Thanks for the home remedy tip. The over the counter expensive meds do not work!!!
I have used for years and prevents cold sores is Lysine. I take it everyday 500mg. If you feel a cold sore coming on take 1000 twice a day. It helps to boost your immune system and works like magic. Either you won’t get the sores or if you start feeling one, it might come out but does not hurt as much and lasts a shorter time.
I have to agree with other posters here. I started to get a fever blister yesterday and it hurt like hell. I put ice on it for 10 minutes and then applied Tree Tree Oil. I did this 3x yesterday and before going to bed I put lip balm on it to keep it moist throughout the night. I woke up today the pain was gone and the blister deflated. You cannot tell I ever had one. All I can say is magic! Thanks for all your post that help me. I have been getting these for over 20 years and they normally are on my lip for 2 weeks. Never again! Ice and Tree Tea oil!
Lavender oil is great for healing quickly too. Though does not seem to be a preventative solution.
i put on honey for 3 to 5 minutes then rinsed it off with warm water. thereafter i placed a thin coating of coconut oil over my lips. later on i repeated this but rinsed it off with lukewarm water and kept a cotton pad of soaked coconut oil onto the affected area. the inflamation decreased a lot, only it was a bit moist. after reading this list i decided to try the 3% hydrogen peroxide method.. dabbed peroxide onto the affected area for 5 minutes…waited 5 minutes n washed it off with lukewarm water. Dabbed it dry and ready to sleep.. hopefully this works well.. ill be updating my progress
PS: (honey method not more than twice daily.. if decide to dab coconut oil as an independent method.. 3 to 4 times a day till the sore vanishes)
