How to Get Rid of Jock Itch

Jock itch, medically known as tinea cruris, is a fungal infection caused by the fungus trichophyton rubrum. Jock itch affects both men and women and commonly occurs on the groin, buttocks, genital area and inner thighs.

However, it is more common in men. Other factors that increase the risk of developing this problem are being overweight, wearing tight underwear, excessive sweating and having a weakened immune system.

Some of the symptoms of jock itch are itching, redness, a burning sensation and flaking skin.

Jock itch is mildly contagious, so do not share personal belongings with others. Even though it is not a serious medical condition, it can be very uncomfortable and embarrassing.

Fortunately, various natural home remedies can provide relief from this problem. Do not consider these remedies as a substitute for standard antifungal medications, though.

Jock Itch on skin

Here are the top 10 ways to get rid of jock itch.

1. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil has natural antifungal properties that can effectively treat jock itch along with other types of skin infections. It also has deep cleansing and stimulating elements along with a powerful antibacterial quality. It will also help alleviate itchiness and inflammation associated with jock itch.

  • Use a cotton ball to apply tea tree oil to the affected skin twice daily. Continue for a few days until the symptoms disappear completely. If it causes a lot of burning sensation then you can use mix four or five drops of tea tree oil in one tablespoon of coconut oil and then use it.
  • Another option is to add a few drops of tea tree oil to your bath water and soak in it for about 15 minutes.
  • You can also use soap or shower gel containing tea tree oil.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar

Washing the infected skin with diluted apple cider vinegar is a great way to deal with jock itch. Apple cider vinegar has strong antifungal and antibacterial properties to cure and control various skin infections.

  1. Mix two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in two cups of warm water.
  2. Wash the infected area with this solution and allow it to dry on its own.
  3. Repeat this process two or three times daily, especially before going to bed.

3. Rubbing Alcohol

Rubbing alcohol is another effective home remedy for jock itch because it kills the fungus causing the infection. Plus, being a drying agent, it helps keep the affected area dry; fungi thrive in warm, moist environments.

  1. Dip a cotton ball in 90 percent isopropyl alcohol.
  2. Dab it on the affected area. You need not wash it off as the alcohol will evaporate quickly.
  3. Do this a few times daily until you are satisfied with the results.

4. Listerine

Listerine is an excellent home remedy for fungal infections like jock itch and athlete’s foot, thanks to its antiseptic, antifungal and antibacterial properties.

  1. Use a cotton ball to apply the amber Listerine mouthwash on the affected skin and leave it on until it dries completely. Initially it will hurt, but you will soon get relief from the soreness and inflammation.
  2. Repeat three or four times daily for a few months for complete relief.

Note: Do not use Listerine on open wounds.

5. White Vinegar

White vinegar can also help greatly in dealing with a skin infection like jock itch as it has antifungal and antiseptic properties.

  • Mix one part of white vinegar and four parts of water. Soak a washcloth in this solution and use it to wash the affected area, gently and thoroughly. Allow the solution to dry on its own; you need not rinse it off. Repeat once or twice daily.
  • Another option is to apply a mixture of equal parts of white vinegar and coconut oil on the affected skin. Leave it on for a few hours before washing it off. Do this twice daily until you get rid of the problem.

6. Bleach

Bleach has antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal properties that help treat jock itch.

  1. Mix one-fourth cup of bleach in a bathtub full of water.
  2. Soak in it for about 15 minutes daily or every other day, depending upon the severity of the condition.

Be sure to pat dry your skin after your bath as moisture can worsen jock itch.

  9. I have another remedy which worked for me and many of my friends after long hours hikes in the boiling sun of the middle east.

It’s pretty simple! Just apply many baby wipes to the rash area, covering it up. Leave them on their spot for about 3 hours.

It may not work immediately, but the next day you will immediately see your red bubbly rash skin start getting it’s color back and seem to get back to level with your regular skin.

    Try it!

    • Candid-B Skin cream topical application twice daily
Safe to use, relief of itch within a week but you have to continue the ointment for not less than a month to completely eradicate the fungus from the skin. This will help keep the infection from coming back.

If the cream doesn’t work, Fluconozole 150mg as a single dose orally is the treatment but it is a schedule H drug and has to be prescribed by a doctor. Don’t take this drug on your own, get prescribed.

Doctors have taken too much of my time and money, so I refuse to see them anymore. I have tried using fluoride, witch hazel, anti-bacterial soap, every anti-fungal cream known to man, bleach, and even creams for yeast infections. I most of the time I simply give up, and buy hydrocortizone cream to reduce the itching so I don’t feel like ripping my nuts off. 25. This procedure really works. Be sure to try it until it completely heals !!!

Wash the affected area with an antifungal soap. Dry it well with a separate towel, if it does not dry well, use either a blower or a fan. Apply pure honey on the area. Let it dry for about 30 mins to an hour. Wash it off again using antifungal soap. Dry it well and apply antifungal power over the affected area. Wear a loose pure cotton shorts. Scratching when it itchs only makes it worse so wash it off immediately to avoid itching. Repeat the procedure whenever it itch. Thanks for this site. Let us keep on posting our experiences for the future to be affected jock itch people lol. I wish this annoying disease disappear forever.

  28. If it is indeed jock itch and not a fungus, the best thing to use is VIX VAPOR RUB. If you don’t believe me, try it on a foot fungus first. When you apply it to a yellow toenail twice a day, (a toenail that is not just discolored, but actually has a fungus underneath – like athlete’s foot) the toenail will turn black only in the fungal area after a few days. That means the fungus is dead. Then just wait until the toenail grows out and cut it over and over until the black nail has completely grown out and been clipped away. I had jock itch for months and used VIX Vapor rub on it after trying a host of other things (including Bactroban, benzoyl peroxide solution, acne meds, and home remedies) and it worked almost immediately. The itch stopped that same day and as I applied it twice a day, the burning stopped too. My skin, after a few weeks, had begin to shed the old cells in that area of my thighs during my baths and my normal skin color began to come back. I had scratched my skin dark dark in that area as I am an African American male. But eventually my skin color came back and the fungus was completely gone. Please treat it quickly as it can spread to the anal area and the pain of treatment will be much much worse! Don’t judge me! LOL

  29. I’ve had jock itch/athletes foot fungus since 1992. Nothing has ever worked other than a short term cure. I’m now 60 years old. As I sleep I scratch and spread it all over my body. I am covered from head to toe with it. I live in Arizona and it’s heating up here. Last night my rectum was itching and in my sleep I spread it everywhere. Today it is flared up even on my head, my ears, and every part of my body.
Once I was confined to a hot jail cell for months. It eventually got so bad that my skin oozed and was almost liquid. I couldn’t even walk. I’m ready to blow my brains out this is so bad… The over the counter stuff does not work for me. Once a doctor gave me pills for it. Nothing has ever worked…

Thanks for all the recommendations, I have almost scratched by junk off at times, have had this issue for over two years !, doctors prescriptions were useless, sprayed cologne liberally for a one minute pain rush, some relief afterwards. Gonna give the garlic a try now. Soaking in the ocean provides some relief but short-lived. I am going to be 50 soon, hard to find a place to hide to scratch and not look like a old perv, lol.

Wash whenever you desire then do same procedure over and over until its gone I did it for a whole day. And next day never had it again. Its really works. You just gonna have the garlic nuts smell.

I put some listerine in a dollar store glass bowl dipped cotton balls in . In circular motions I rubbed lightly and squeezed the liquid all over itch areas and even on skin next to itch about 1/4 inch away . To make sure it did not spread itch further .. after applying it will burn let it continue till relief starts .. I took a Hamid dryer put it on cool or stood in front of a fan till dry … left me sticky but I’d rather be sticky then itchy …do it for at least 3 weeks or longer if you want to be positive its gone .. after treatment throw away the glass bowlused for dipping ….. good luck all hope this helps

Applied to infected area 2 times a day and allowed to dry on skin. Do not dry with a towel or wash off. After the first day the fungus was drying and after the second day it was starting to go away. I then went back to the creams and away it went.

ITS GONNA BE ROUGH BE READY AND HAVE SOMETHING TO BITE DOWN ON. Do this twice a day or more i’ve been doing it for 3 days and i’m almost all cleared up. it takes much longer for the burn effect to kick in and it last much less longer and less painful. i’m almost out of the woods guys. this shit works

I think the trick is to detoxify the yeast from your body. stop eating bread cakes pastries cookies etc. with yeast. replace with lots of green vegetables and drink lots of water. as you purify from the inside your sweat will no longer contain food for the fungus. please let me know if u had success this way.

  40. Here’s my home remedy that seems to be working so far. None of the overpriced pharmacy ointments have helped so after reading a lot of posts this is what seems to be working 3 days in.
Items needed 1. Hairdryer 2. Selsun Blue shampoo 3. Borax – the 20 mules 4. ORGANIC Apple Cider Vinegar – Braggs is one of the brand names. 5. Benadryl – I prefer the liquids – anti itch while sleeping.
1st before shower, take borax and put in a container to mix, the glad container works fine, just make sure it’s big enough for the next steps, I go by feel so I don’t have measurements but you don’t need a lot – depending on the area a handfull of Borax or so should do just fine. Again I go by feel for the next step – about a quarter sized or so amount add Selsun Blue Shampoo – Use the name brand and a splash of hot water. Now Mix until you get the consistency of a Meringue (lemon meringue pie) *Caution, when you mix it it has an amonia smell so I’m not sure with the chemical consistency if I am mixing an amonia base type paste, it will sting a little so if you are sensitive and low pain tolorence or sensitive skin I advise caution ( i put caution to the wind with this, as anyone who is suffering knows). Leave on for 3 – 5 minutes – make sure you have a towel underneath or stand in the tub it is grainy and will flake off. Lightly massage onto the problem areas – If it’s blistered or opened I wouldn’t massage it I would let it rinse off without scrubbing. – again it will sting a litttle for a while. Now shower as usual. Out of the shower towel off then grab the Hair dryer and dry all the parts front and back – as much heat and air as you can take – be careful not to burn. 2nd step after you are completely dry – ORGANIC Apple Cider Vinegar add a splash of hot water or more – this will sting as well – do not put on stright – strength to what you can tolerate. Again make sure you have a towel underneath or in the tub and open a window – you’ll know why if you try this – dab on with cotton balls to the affected area(s) and let it dry – do not dry it off. The smell on your “parts” will dissipate – keep in mind if you are only 5 mins from work give it about 20 mins for the smell to go away.

    • I forgot to add: In the morning before food and coffee Tablespoon or so of ORGANIC Apple Cider mix with water – as strong or as weak as you want to make it and shoot it back. Same after dinner, and the same before bed. At bedtime – I take 2 liquid gel Benadryls for anti -itch sleep. If I wake up 1:00a.m due to itch – Purell (Use the brand name) hand sanitizer – this will burn like hell for a minute or so but it stops the itch immediately then 1 or 2 benadryls depending on when I need to wake up.

  41. I had the same symptoms you have all described for about 4 months, 3 doctors and many tubes of antifungals. I urge everyone to examine how your clothes are being laundered. My wife was putting in a full cap of detergent and fabric softener, but the instructions on the bottles said to only put about a half inch from the cap bottom. With the inventions of HD washing machines and concentrated detergent, etc. it’s easy to make that mistake. I was basically sitting in soap and fabric softener all day.

I threw out all my underwear and bath towels and wash the new ones only in ALL Free and Clear. I use no fabric softener. I was back to normal in a week.
