People of any age can have problems with blackheads on their skin, but most often it is an issue during the teenage and adolescent years.
Also referred to as open comedones, blackheads are small yellow or black bumps that form when a clog develops in the opening of hair follicles due to a combination of excess sebum and build-up of dirt and dead skin cells.
The bumps appear dark not because of dirt but as a result of oxidization. This happens when the clogged pores are exposed to the air.
Factors like hormonal changes in the body, excessive use of cosmetic products, improper skin care, stress and genetics contribute to this problem.
Blackheads commonly occur on the face, particularly the nose. They can also appear on the chest, back, neck, arms and shoulders. If left untreated, they can spur acne breakouts.
There are many prescription medicines for the treatment of blackheads, but you can always try natural treatments. With simple ingredients easily found in most kitchens, you can treat your blackheads within a few days.
Here are the top 10 home remedies for blackheads.
(Out of the 10, we have covered three highly effective home remedies in this video as well.)
Contents
1. Baking Soda
Baking soda is an effective treatment for blackheads as well as acne. It helps clear the skin of impurities such as debris and dirt.
- Mix two teaspoons of baking soda with mineral water to make a paste.
- Apply the paste generously on the affected skin area and massage gently. Allow it to dry for a few minutes before rinsing it off with warm water.
- Repeat this remedy once or twice a week.
2. Cinnamon
Cinnamon can be used to remove and prevent blackheads
- Mix one teaspoon each of cinnamon powder and lemon juice with a pinch of turmeric powder (optional). Spread it on your face, leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes and then rinse it off.
- Alternatively, mix one teaspoon of cinnamon powder and honey to form a thick paste. Apply it on the affected area before bed and leave it on overnight. In the morning, wash your face well with normal water. For best results, follow this remedy daily for about 10 days.
3. Oatmeal
The combination of oatmeal and yogurt is great for keeping your skin free of blackheads.
- Mix one teaspoon honey and the juice of four tomatoes in sufficient oatmeal to make a paste.
- Scrub it on your skin.
- Wash it off after 10 minutes.
- Repeat regularly for clear skin.
You can also make a paste by mixing together two tablespoons of oatmeal, three tablespoons of plain yogurt, and small amounts of lemon juice and olive oil. Apply the paste to your entire face, leave for a few minutes and then rinse your face with water.
4. Lemon Juice
Lemon juice, also used in acne treatment, can help remove blackheads. The nutrients and vitamins present in lemon juice are good for all skin types.
- Put a few drops of honey on half a lemon. For extra exfoliation, you can also add a little sugar. Gently rub the lemon on your face, especially on the blackhead prone areas. Rinse it off after 10 minutes. Repeat once or twice a week.
- You can also mix fresh lemon juice with milk or rosewater to create a facial cleanser and use a few times a week.
5. Green Tea
Green tea can also be used to treat blackheads.
- Mix one teaspoon of dry green tea leaves with a little water to make a paste.
- Gently scrub the paste over the affected area for two to three minutes. This scrub deep cleans oily skin and helps unclog pores.
- Rinse it off with lukewarm water.
6. Honey
The balancing quality present in honey is good for both oily skin and blackheads. Honey hydrates as well as tightens the skin pores, giving you a clear complexion.
- Apply some pure honey on your face. Leave it on for about 10 minutes.
- Rinse your face with lukewarm water.
7. Turmeric
Turmeric, which works well for minor burns, can also be used to treat blackheads.
- Mix some turmeric powder with two tablespoons of mint juice. Apply it to the affected areas. Allow it to dry for a few minutes and then wash the area with lukewarm water.
- You can also make a thick paste by mixing red sandalwood, turmeric powder and milk together. Apply it on the affected area and after 10 minutes wash the skin with water.
8. Epsom Salt
Another effective and natural way to treat blackheads is Epsom salt.
- Mix one teaspoon of Epsom salt and a few drops of iodine in a little hot water until the salt dissolves completely. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature.
- Use a cotton ball to apply to the mixture on the affected area. Allow the mixture to dry.
- Use a clean washcloth to gently wash it off.
9. Cornmeal
Cornmeal acts as an abrasive to clean out dirt blocking the pores in your skin.
- Mix one tablespoon of powdered cornmeal with some milk or water.
- Before applying the mixture, use steam to help open the pores on your face. Then apply the mixture and gently massage it in a circular motion. Concentrate on the most affected areas.
- After a few minutes, rinse your face with cold water. This will help close the pores.
10. Fenugreek
One of the easiest and simplest natural remedies for blackheads is fenugreek.
- Make a thick paste by mixing fresh fenugreek leaves with a little water.
- Apply it on the affected area and allow it to dry for about 10 minutes. Rinse it off with lukewarm water.
- Use this remedy daily.
These remedies have helped many people eliminate blackheads. Most need to be used regularly for long-term results. If they do not work for you, you may want to consult a dermatologist.

Sometimes when you wash your face too much and you dry out your skin, your skin reacts by overproducing oils, make sure when you wash you also hydrate your skin to prevent from to much oil, also if you exfoliate it helps get rid of dead skin cells which can clog pores. can mix some sea salt (or brown sugar or coffee grinds) with a type of oil (I chose extra virgin olive oil but you can use jojoba or coconut or another type) and once its mixed together you rub it on your hands and face then just rinse off with warm water (NO soap) 🙂
I have mature somewhat sensitive skin and needed a treatment for blackheads/whiteheads on T zone. I tried the lemon juice (freshly picked) & cinnamon mask and couldn’t leave it on for 5 seconds let alone 15 minutes!!!! I did this after steaming my face so wasn’t too surprised when it started stinging but OMG it it started burning and couldn’t get it off fast enough!! Beware!!
tried the baking soda will see thanks
Has any1 tried #6 Honey? What were your results?
hi Na,
I’ve tried honey facial once a week and it seems to be best for my sensitive skin . once the honey is removed after leaving it on for 15 minutes your face feels tighter and there is a gorgeous healthy glow.
If I leave honey and cinnamon over night… I’m scared I’ll have ants all over me when I wake or whatever bugs…… Won’t it make your pillow sticky as well since your face moves around with it..
If you put a layer of tissue paper or something similar on top of the honey/cinnamon mixture, it won’t stick to anything and you can just peel it off in the morning 🙂
U don’t need to do this. u can use 10 dhorps of rose water and 6 drops of lemon juice in face. it works for me.but u need do use pure rose water.then it will be worked. Sorry my English is not good.

I have had black heads and zits since 10. I’m 14 now and I see comments saying baking soda works a lot. I’ll try that.
Try the combo of 1T. Baking Soda and 1T. Honey (be sure to mix it til combined and a creamy texture). This mixture works fantastically on my daughter’s sensitive, acne prone skin. Dealing with oral and topical prescribed meds for acne….They do work, but the oral meds take a toll on the tummy. So, this is what I suggest to try (only because I am seeing results on my daughter, and I’m very pleased with the results):
1. keep applying the baking soda and honey mixture (I’ve been using reg honey, not organic. It is helping. I’ll try organic honey later.
2. Start taking a probiotic capsule; 1Daily….the name of the capsules are “Primadophilus” Original and is made by Nature’s Way; 90 vcaps for ages 12 & up; keep refrigerated; 45 mg (Proprietary Probiotic Blend providing 5 Billion CFU).
3. Your child’s stomach will feel much better after taking this probiotic pill. The prescribed oral pills take so much energy out of them.
4.Always drink plenty of water, plenty of exercise, adequate fruits, fiber and vegetables, including meats / protein.
Once the b. soda and honey mixture is applied and left on for 10 minutes, you’ll want to use two fingers to gently rub your face, in circular motion, be sure to get all areas on your face (in the eyebrows and hairline, only if you feel blackhead bumps there).
Once you have rinsed your face / body thoroughly. Apply organic Coconut oil. The Coconut oil will look solid, a white color. So when you scoop out the oil, make sure you heat it, melt it in the palm of your hands, then gently massage on your face.
This homemade remedy is helping with my daughter’s acne prone and blackhead issue. I’m telling you as a mother…”what a relief!” I am very satisfied with the results.

I tried the honey method and there were improvement. When I tried the baking soda I mixed up a paste with sparkling water, I suppose soda water would be much the same. I thought this was also good. Early days but will try both again, but will try cinnamon next.
Boil mineral water and soak a face towel into the water. Then just place the hot towel onto your face for a few minutes. After this, apply the baking soda and afterwards your face will feel super soft and glow wonderfully!!
u can use pure aloevera gel it is very effective
Mixed baking soda ,little peroxide, honey & ebson salt into a paste. Bubbles up and can feel it working. Wash off 5 min. For men(shaving makes the skin little more sensitive). 10-15 for women(longer if u like).use circular massaging with 2 fingers before removing with warm water. Feels tighter, cleaner & detoxified!
